It could be argued that 2017 was the year when natural disaster reigned supreme and climate change well and truly reared its ugly head. However, there are good wines to be had – particularly when it came to the sweet wines of Sauternes and Tokaji, the whites of Alsace, Germany and Austria, and the fortified wines of Port.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
  • Quevedo 2017 Vintage Port
  • Quinta da Devesa 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port
  • Bourgogne 2017 Grand Vin de Borgogne Burgundy

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The world’s largest dinosaur footprint was discovered. The 5.5 foot (1.7 meter) dinosaur footprint was discovered in Kimberley, Western Australia.
Eurovision Winner: Portugal with the song "Amar Pelos Dois" by Salvador Sobrai.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi

Portugal: We are pleased to announce that the major port houses have declared the 2017 Port Vintage. Extremely rare, this is the Symington family's first ever consecutive declaration and follows the acclaimed 2016 Vintage. This is a milestone moment in port history and is the result of two very different but extremely high-quality years for port in the Douro.

Warmer, drier conditions than usual resulted in an early harvest of small, compact bunches of grapes in excellent condition, with yields amongst the lowest of the century so far, 20% below the 10-year average. The resulting wines are characterised by extraordinary intensity, concentration and structure, combined with stunning aromas and freshness. Their quality and fantastic potential mean that we believe 2017 will long be remembered as a year of incredible wines.

Given the very low-yielding year, the 2017 Vintage Port is the smallest declaration of the 21st century, with en primeur volumes approximately a third less than in 2016! So far, we have secured en primeur ports from Taylors, Fonseca, Croft, Grahams, Grahams’s Stone Terraces, Smith Woodhouse, Cockburns. Dow, Vesuvio, Quevedo, Palmer, Pocas, Vesuvio Capella, Noval, Noval Nacional, Niepoort and Warres. We are working to build the most comprehensive list ever offered!

    Vintage Port, DOC Douro
    ** 95 Points - Wine Enthusiast **

The Maynard 2017 Vintage Port is silky and fresh, with wonderful purity of fruit.
As the wine ages it softens and slowly sheds its deep dark colour, gaining in structure and complexity. As Vintage Port throws a natural "crust or sediment in the bottle, it should be stood upright for 24 hours and decanted carefully before serving.

    Presented in Devesa Gift Box

The Quinta da Devesa 2017 Late Bottled Vintage comes from a single harvest, only from noble grape varieties. It is aged four to six years in barrels before being bottled. It is without a doubt a distinct, powerful, challenging, full and harmonious LBV, with very well-structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit. After opening the bottle, its peak lasts for 15 to 30 days.In order to maintain the excellent characteristics of this wine, bottling uses the same method as Vintage, without any prior treatments. Messias, 2017

Late Bottled Vintage Port, DOC Douro
    *** 90 Points - Decanter ***

This wine is crafted from a selection of high-quality grapes, traditionally foot-trodden and aged in large oak vats for a period of 4 to 6 years before bottling. Unlike vintage ports, which are bottled after just two years of aging, LBV ports are aged longer to achieve a more approachable style while still retaining the depth and complexity of a vintage port.

Deep ruby colour, with notes of ripe dark fruits like blackberries, plums, and cherries, with hints of spice, chocolate, and subtle oak. Full-bodied with a well-balanced sweetness, the palate is rich with flavours of dark berries, black cherries, and some spicy undertones.

Florent’s use of 400-liter barrels for aging adds dimensional texture without overpowering the nose or palate. On the palate, this rare wine evokes the silkiness of Volnay and the power of Pommard.

About this wine producer: Like Raphaël Bérêche, Florent Garaudet is a self-confident, socially intelligent visionary, who, at the age of twenty-three was impatient to strike out on his own. Dense inky core fading to a magenta rim. A seductive Croft nose, ripe and voluptuous but with the depth and density characteristic of the 2017 vintage. As usual, plump, juicy blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry form the backdrop. However, the nose is soon drawn into a vortex of heady, complex aroma in which resiny scents of eucalyptus and gumcistus blend with pungent notes of sage and mint, fresh hints of grapefruit and a mellow spiciness. On the palate, firm, sinewy tannins are wrapped in a thick envelope of dense, velvety texture. As is often the case, this is one of the most exotic and beguiling wines of the vintage.
