Impressive purple-black core with a narrow purple rim. An intense burst of powerful woodland fruit, a dense coulis of blackberry and blackcurrant, almost overwhelms the nose. The black fruit aromas are infused with discreet notes of cherry and mocha. As would be expected of Taylor’s, the fruit is very fine and focused, but the year seems to have given it an additional layer of density and weight. A familiar veil of violet scent hangs over the wine, together with a fragrance of rose petal and wild, minty herbal aromas. On the palate, the wine has beautifully ripe tannins, which integrate perfectly into the mid-palate, providing both structure and volume, and then break out on the finish with a firm wiry, grip. …

In addition to a classic Taylor’s Vintage, Taylor’s has announced that it will bottle a Vargellas Vinha Velha Vintage Port from the exceptional 2017 harvest. This will be only the eighth Vargellas Vinha Velha ever to be released and quantities are very limited. As usual, it is an extraordinary wine, a showcase of the old vines’ ability to deliver multiple layers and dimensions of aroma.”

Tasting notes
This 30-year-old tawny from Taylor's own vineyards shows incredible length a deep, old gold colour with hints of dried fruit and honey offsetting the rich nutty aromas. Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it.

LBV's display the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.

The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is an incredible wine from an outstanding vintage. Great plum red, vibrant. Fresh nose, clean fruit with delicate floral notes. A wine with great complexity of fruit – berry and spice, dense, luscious and concentrated, yet with a soft, delicate finish which belies the inner strength.

The impressive 1976 Vargellas is a 50% Opague mature mahogany colour as befits this hot vintage. lots of spice on the nose which is full of cedar wood and plums. on the palate the wine is very attractive.
