Tasting Notes:
This elegant and powerful Douro red offers rich aromas of blackberry, cassis, and subtle toasted notes, with hints of vanilla and sweet spices. The palate is juicy, well-balanced, and precise, showcasing ripe blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries with touches of liquorice, floral notes, and a hint of black olive. Silky tannins and a fresh acidity create a refined structure, leading to a long, satisfying finish.
The 2017 Tinto Vinhas Velhas is a field blend from 80-year-old vines (some 20 grapes, with eight identified, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and others), aged for 12 months in mostly used French oak. It comes in at 15.2% alcohol.

17,5 pts Vinho Grandes Escolhas - The aroma reveals notes of blackberry, toasted notes and small notes of vanilla, cassis associated with small touches of ripe strawberry / cherry, as well as very discreet notes of sweet spices and a very discreet touch of Sichuan pepper. In the mouth it is juicy, fruity, well balanced, fairly straight forward and offers a beautiful acidity, a slight tension, precision, sweet tooth. In the mouth it expresses notes of ripe blackberry and raspberry and small notes of cassis combined with touches of succulent blueberries, flowers, liquorice, light notes of vanilla, as well as very discrete notes of cardamom and black olive. The tannins are very firm and discreetly smooth. Good end of mouth.

Bitter and showing herbs and something different on the flavor profile, perhaps a very ripe and flamboyant Touriga Nacional, this is tightly wound but better for structure than the flavor profile. There might be a little over-ripeness. In some ways, this is a lot of wine for the price, but it is not polished; it's a bit too hard edged and it is a little flamboyant. It will do better with a food pairing.
