Blandys 10 Year Old Bual was aged for 10 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional Canteiro system, whereby the casks of this wine are gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. During this totally natural ageing, the wine underwent regular racking before finally being bottled.

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch, staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship, he had been in constant contact with an old-school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charlestown, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Some early 19th century bottles are found branded Rufino Teixeira and this is relative to the RT on this bottle. Teixeira is an old Madeira family, Tristão Vaz Teixeira being one of the first to discover the Island in the 15th century (in 1419, 600 years ago!)

In January 2019 we received the following email.
"Regarding the bottle of Madeira Wine "RT 1789" on sale, would like to inform you as follows;
The wine is Sercial and the bottle was painted by my grandfather, which was a Madeira Wine exporter around the year 1910.

Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey. You should expect a light mahogany/copper coloured wine with aromas of maple syrup, roasted walnut notes and hints of coffee. On the palate its high acidity will create a much needed balance against the sweetness making the sugar barely noticeable. Flavours of figs, vanilla and caramel should dominate the palate and the wine should finish off long with caramelised citrus notes.
