Justino's - Malvasia

"There won’t be a lot of this wine on the palate so it is a rare privilege to have tasted it. Amber in colour the wine is woody to the nose as it should be, it is on the palate that this wine reveals itself, extraordinary levels of layered flavour, nuts and candied orange, sweet but with an utterly bracing acidity that keeps the wine from being at all cloying. A rare wine and a world class wine, a true delight and a wine to share amongst the best of friends." Tasting Notes

This wine is a blend of several grape varieties grown in the island, predominately Tinta Negra, harvested in 1997.

"A dark amber colour with a lucid and consistent yellow edge. More than a Marsala, the impact of the aroma is like a great Vincotto from the Marche region, although it is much finer. The bouquet has less caramel and is less volatile with more notes of prune, dried fruit and coffee. The mouthfeel is sweet and caramel-like with notes of black tea and coffee, while the finish is invigorated by a distinct acidity." Silver Award -San Francisco International Wine Competition

* Review by Sarah Ahmed- www.thewinedetective.co.uk *

Try this luscious sweet and full-bodied Madeira with stewed meat dishes with sweet and spicy elements. It pars marvellously with intense and rich dark chocolate as well as nutty and caramel desserts. Why not serve at the very end of the meal with a blue cheese such as stilton or Roquefort. Finally, a Malvasia is also delicious with cigars.

Terrantez Madeira
Presented in Wooden Gift Box

Blandy’s Terrantez 1980

Review bySarah Ahmed "The Wine Detective". "I’m a huge Terrantez fan and this one ticks all the right boxes. Smooth on the nose with a smooze of light caramel and sweet café crème. A lick of tobacco herbality – greener – lends appetising lift. The saliva glands are at work already! And so it is in the mouth – almost creamy on entry, yet penetrating too thanks to its lively, very persistent backbone of acidity. Delicate staccato spices and a lick of toffee apple seduce. That bottled electricity, v.a. accelerant fires up a super long, reverberating finish, its delicious woody, mellow timbre deftly leavened by that light, herbal riff.

Leacock, 1966

Bual

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company. Bottled in 1994 after 28 years in cask, this totally unique vintage Madeira is sweet, though markedly less so than Malmsey Madeira.

Sercial is the name of a white grape grown in Portugal, especially on the island of Madeira. It has given name to the dryest of the four classic varieties of Madeira fortified wine.

The anglicised name Sercial came to be associated with the Madeira style rather than the grape variety, being the lightest, most acidic and delicate expression of Madeira that takes the longest to mature.

The oldest established Madeira Wine company, was founded in 1745 by William Gordon and Francis Newton. In 1808 William Cossart an Irishman of Huguenot descent joined the firm that later came to be known by its present name.

Barbeito bottled - Sercial

94 Points - Neal Martin - The Wine Advocate: "The 1910 Sercial has a tightly coiled bouquet with notes of walnut, nutmeg, white pepper and dried quince that demonstrates great clarity. The aromas become increasingly spicy in the glass, but never volatile. The palate is silky smooth, with laser-like acidity that slices through copious layers of dried honey, lemongrass, sour lemon, cumin and a touch of fennel. It has superb weight and presence, almost searing in sharpness towards the finish. This is an untamed, compelling Sercial."

Madeira, 1892

MMV, Sercial, Madeira - Bottled by Barbeito

This is a extremely rare and very limited release of the 1892 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1892 Sercial is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1890

Verdelho Madeira

*** 96 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1890 Verdelho has an elegant, refined bouquet that is pure and seductive. It offers precise aromas of orange peel, tangerine, dried honey and wax resin with great delineation. The palate is very well-balanced with impressive clarity and poise. It builds nicely in the mouth with tangy, oxidative notes that are perfectly in tune with the sweetness. This illustrates just how well Verdelho ages over decades. This is a stunning 122-year-old Madeira." The Wine Advocate

Malmsey Madeira

Malmsey (also known as Malvasia or Malvazia) has its fermentation halted when its sugars are between 3.5 and 6.5° Baumé. This style of wine is characterised by its dark colour, rich texture, and coffee-caramel flavours. Like other Madeiras made from the noble grape varieties, the Malvasia grape used in Malmsey production has naturally high levels of acidity in the wine, which balances with the high sugar levels so the wines do not taste cloyingly sweet.

MBV - Malvasia, bottled by Barbeito from demijon in 2017.

Nearly 150 years old, this full-bodied Madeira has not lost any of its power and complexity. This is a rare limited release of the 1875 Madeira from the “Barbeito Family Collection”. This is one of several vintages coming from Ricardo Freitas’s mother and grandfather’s reserves and usually spend a significant amount of time in demi-john.

It is a glorious, life-affirming bouquet. The palate is beautifully balanced with vibrant acidity that is entwined with notes of molasses, honey, quince and Lapsang Souchong.

This is an incredible fortified wine made from the Sercial grape variety aged in a solera system whereby maturing barrels are topped up with younger wines to build balance and complexity whilst also increasing their elegance and freshness. After spending around half a century in casks it was put into demi-johns prior to bottling. It is wonderfully scented with notes of dried fruits, citrus peel, coffee grounds and spices. In January 2019 we received the following email.
"Regarding the bottle of Madeira Wine "RT 1789" on sale, would like to inform you as follows;
The wine is Sercial and the bottle was painted by my grandfather, which was a Madeira Wine exporter around the year 1910.

Verdelho Madeira

Tasting Notes
Clear and bright coppery brown colour with golden nuances and greenish reflections. On the nose it´s very characteristic, exuberant and very ethereal, full of balsamic notes, spices and dry fruits. On the palate it´s very powerful, fresh and concentrated with a long aftertaste and retronasal full of balsamic notes, exotic woods and old rum.

In the 17th century Verdelho was considered the most representative variety in Madeira Island and some even say that may be originated from the island. Verdelho produces a wine must with moderated sugar levels, noticeable acidity and produces a mediumdry style of Madeira wine.

Madeira, 1948

MBV Malvesia Bott: Barbeito, Madeira
94 Points - Wine Advocate

Review" The rambunctious 1948 Malvasia has a far more resinous, fiery bouquet compared directly against the 1954. It demands a little more coaxing, but offers absorbing aromas of melted candle wax, smoked walnut, nutmeg and cumin. The palate has a lovely opening, with Schezhuan setting the tongue on fire, and then it glides towards its elegant conclusion of barley sugar, bitter orange, chocolate and lemongrass. The aftertaste is extraordinarily long, the tongue tingling a minute after the Madeira has exited. It is the kind of Madeira that needs to be kept on a leash!" Neil Martin, Wine Advocate 2012.

Bual, Madeira

Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey. You should expect a light mahogany/copper coloured wine with aromas of maple syrup, roasted walnut notes and hints of coffee. On the palate its high acidity will create a much needed balance against the sweetness making the sugar barely noticeable. Flavours of figs, vanilla and caramel should dominate the palate and the wine should finish off long with caramelised citrus notes.

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name, situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North African coast. This sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. Madeira is the Portuguese word for wood or timber.
