Description
Tasting Notes
Coppery amber with golden-greenish nuance, a brilliant crystalline. Aromas of intense sweet spices, vanilla, dried fruits, candied apricots and exotic woods. The palate is a rich, medium sweet, with a balanced concentration. The long smooth finish is filled with flavors of candied fruit macerated in brandy, spices, resinous woods such as cedar.
Vinification
Blandy’s Bual 1972 was aged in seasoned American oak casks and as with all the family’s vintages, this wine started its aging process in the warm high attic floors of the lodge in the center of Funchal. Over the 50 years, the wine passed down from the warmer top floor of the Blandy’s Wine Lodges, the “Sotão de Amendoa”. The art of finding the right balance between concentration and the freshness of the wine lies in the winemaker’s decision when to transfer the wine to the lower cooler north facing floors of the lodge.
About Blandy's

Blandy’s Madeira remains totally dedicated to the traditions, care, and craftsmanship of Madeira Wine for over 200 years.

Reviews
Blandy’s 1972 Bual 96/100 Wine Spectator, James Molesworth
Juicy and very tightly focused, with a mouthwatering edge from start to finish, this ripples with green tea, dried ginger, buckwheat, salted caramel and crumbled hazelnut notes. Long, pinpoint finish. Drink now. 100 cases made.
Neil Martin Vinous 93/100 Drink 2022-2052.
The 1972 Blandy’s Bual (2022 Bottling) has 115g/L residual sugar and 9.2g/L total acidity. It opens nicely over the course of 20 minutes in the glass, developing mandarin and light resinous notes, green mango and beeswax. The palate is well balanced with ample weight and a lovely viscous texture, quite rich for the category. There is just the right degree of spice here leaving the tongue tingling during and after imbibement. The finish is quite intense yet focused, not overly powerful, but seems to linger in the mouth for a minute afterwards. This is just delicious. 1,206 bottles produced.
93/100 Drink 2022-2052.

“Mid-deep mahogany, olive green rim; lovely, open, expressive, savoury-sweet aromas, dried apricot richness and exotic spicy complexity; smooth and suave, Elvas plums with peppery spice and a touch of salinity, rich (115 g/l residual sugar), complex but very elegant too (9.2 g/l total acidity) with a long, lithe finish. Great poise”.
