Toro Albala

We are delighted to exclusively offer Toro Albala fortified wines from the Spanish region of Morilla Moriles. Toro Albala pioneered the introduction of the the dessert-styled Pedro Ximenez in 1970. Today it remains the world's only specialist in 100% vintage Pedro Ximenez wines as well as characterful dry, old, vintage-dated Amontillados of outstanding quality. Toro Albala has the finest vineyard holdings in Montilla and the oldest stocks which are released in small batches.

The Toro Albala bodega was set up in 1922 by grower Jose Maria Toro Albala to capitalise on the popularity of Fino wine with local farm workers. The winery is located in a former power station at Aguilar de la Frontera, which gave rise to the joke that the wine was electric. Their fino is still called 'Electrico' today. In the 1960's enologist and nephew of the founder Antonio Sanchez took over the bodega. He moved the focus toward traditional ageing in a 'crianza' system similar to Sherry (although wines from Montilla can't call themselves Sherry). The soleras in the subterranean tunnels of the old building comprise of approximately 6000 barrels, some of which contain the oldest wines available in Andalucia.

Bodegas Toro Albala is inside the protected designation of Montilla-Moriles which is one of the largest Andalusian viticulture zones, characterised by the elaboration of fino wines made from grapes grown in albariza soils. One of the main characteristics of this region is the cultivation of Pedro Ximenez grape, which is utilised in the elaboration of our dry wines as well as the sweet ones.
