Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, …

Vintage Port
"Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced...The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port. (1/ 1989) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Very very dark. Sweet, spicy, liquorice nose. Very broad start to the palate and then dried fruits on the finish. Lots of firm tannins still. Still relatively embryonic. Heat on the finish. Warre's Vintage Port, 1981
Late Bottled Vintage Port
Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood. This particular vintage is from 1981, which was bottled in 1985. …

Vintage Port
Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. Quinta da Cavadinha
The 1979 Vintage Port from Warre's is seriously attractive. After 4 hours of decanting, it had opened up nicely with lots of fig-like fruits. Fonseca Port, 1977
Vintage Port
Excellent provenance
Damaged label
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. …

Crusted Port - Bottled in 1974
Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle.
Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage.
Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.
Usually a year is stated on the label which, because the wine was made from a blend of harvests, is the year in which the wine was bottled. …

Reviews for 1966 Warre's Vintage Port
91 points Wine Spectator
There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)
Jancis Robinson
Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol. …

Kopke, 1964
Colheita Port
94 Points - Wine Enthusiast
This 1964 Colheita Port from Kopke was made with traditional Douro grape varieties harvested in 1964. It was then aged in oak casks for over half a century, resulting in a complex bouquet of dried fruit, milk chocolate and freshly ground coffee on the nose. The palate has a good structure and acidity with notes of apricot, runny honey. It is an exceptional wine that is ready to drink now.
Reviews: "With a light amber colour, reveals a nose full of elegance and character, where the dried fruits are blended with the light sensations of chocolate and coffee. In the mouth it’s an attractive, velvety and involving wine. …

Cockburn Port, 1963
Vintage Port
Excellent Levels | Good Provenance
REMAINS OF LABEL
Reviews:
"Perfectly integrated and showing cherry, raspberry, baker's spices and hints of fig on the nose and palate. With air the fruit became more plummy in character and picked up more complex dried fruit notes. It's sweet, but not Graham's or Fonseca sweet and there's actually some nice acidity to the wine that keeps it fresh. Seamless with the alcohol sewn into the fabric of the wine nicely." Cellar Tracker 2012
'Bright ruby red. Full rich red chocolately spicy aroma. Ripe rich round slightly hot fruit on the palate'. Cellar Tracker tasted 2005.

This wine is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is likely to be ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style wine. Intense, structured with a nice soft finish." Almost perfect in its maturity. Still delicious.
"A powerhouse port that has been mellowed and opened up by time. Now in its 43rd year, its tannins have softened to reveal dark fruit flavors, herbaceousness and plenty of grip in the finish." Wine Spectator, 2003.

"A green rim with a tawny core, sediment too. A deep, spicy nose shows dried spice and fleshy tamarind. In the mouth, it’s very concentrated, spicy and lively, with liquorice and darker treacle toffee notes. There’s a trace of bitterness to its slightly spirity finish, but it’s deliciously spicy with plenty of vigour." Sarah Amhed, The Wine Detective

Colheita Port, DOC Douro
Reviews
"This brings back a fond memory of a long lost friend, Paul Napolitano from NY. He once opened this identical Port for me years ago at his home and at the time, it was the finest Colheita I had experienced, as well as the oldest. This one was bottled in 1976 or 1977. A piece is torn off the label and makes it impossible to be certain. Dark coffee color with a greenish edge. Is this Madeira? A nose of bouillon cube, scents of sea breeze and toffee, reminiscent of a Malvasia and the richness and supple spine live up to that mindset. The palate is packed with copious caramel and fig flavors along with prunes and toffee intricately woven into a neat little package. …
