Overall, the 2004 vintage was a bit of a mixed bag throughout the wine world and few regions managed to produce spectacular wines of note.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

This Year in History: Fun Fact: Long-running children's animated television series Peppa Pig premieres.
Eurovision Winner: Ukraine with the song "Wild Dances" by Rusiana
Born in this Year: Millie Bobby Brown, a British actress, who gained recognition for playing Eleven in the Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things
Top Grossing Movie: Shrek 2
Bordeaux: The 2004 wine vintage marked a return to a more classic Bordeaux vintage. The wines are more traditionally styled, and will make fine drinking for many cellars. The vintage seems a little under-rated compared with 2003 and the wines represent good value.
Italian: Produce of Piemonte in 2004 is very promising with few extremes of weather and well balanced wines. In Tuscany, the year was an exceptionally good vintage, central Italy’s equivalent of the perfect growing season that France experienced in 2005.
Portugal: The 2004 vintage was not generally declared, but some wonderful single quinta vintages were bottled. These 2004 Vintage Ports show an intense deep purple-red colour, a factor that was strongly influenced by the August rains that softened the skins and allowed for better colour extraction. The nose is lifted and fresh, again thanks to the cooler August weather. The taste is rich, firm and with good acidity and fine peppery tannins. These wines are most attractive and will age extremely well, making them an ideal 21 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.
Spain: A very good year, especially for Rioja, with wines that should last well.

Cote-Rotie, 2004
Delas, Côte Rôtie, La Landonne
The 2004 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is a wine from one of the most prestigious appellations in the Northern Rhône region of France. Côte-Rôtie is renowned for its Syrah-based wines, which are often co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier (though La Landonne is typically 100% Syrah).
Here’s a breakdown of what you might expect from this wine:
Vintage Overview:
2004 Rhône Vintage: A cooler vintage with relatively high acidity and moderate ripeness. Wines from 2004 often display finesse, elegance, and a focus on aromatic complexity rather than sheer power.
Côte-Rôtie in 2004: Wines from this year tend to lean towards the classic style with vibrant fruit, peppery spice, and good aging potential. …

Fleur Cardinale, 2004
Saint Emillion Grand Cru, Bordeaux
The 2004 Fleur Cardinale is a gorgeous deep, rich wine, pure maroon colour. Rather shy nose to start that takes some coaxing and then aromas of red plum, boysenberry, cassis, fennel seed, cedar and suede unfurl. Lovely nose! Full bodied, dry and still surprisingly tannic on the palate, but good fruit extract and pitched acidity. The flavours are all deep red and black fruits, lots of black plum, a bit of bramble, charred oak, sous bois and chalk. Very smooth and nicely integrated. Finishes long, juicy and with lingering fruit. No where near past its prime. Drinking beautifully right now! (Cellar Tracker Review - 2021). …

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, the 2004 Costa Russi offers a complex and inviting bouquet, featuring concentrated blackberry, floral notes, grilled meat, and hints of dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and luxurious, with supple, caressing tannins that provide structure without overwhelming the wine’s refined character. Layers of dark fruit, licorice, and spice unfold gradually, leading to a long, persistent finish. …

Quinta de la Rosa, 2004
Vintage Port, Douro
Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.
The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.
It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports. …

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2004
'Nacional' Vintage Port, Douro In Presentation Case
The 2004 Noval Nacional is a wonderful 2004 vintage Port wine. We are thrilled to be able to offer the Nacional 2004. Christian fell in love with the wine after harvest, so the wine was declared but not released. Kept instead under the watchful eye of Technical Director Antonio Agrellos to see how it developed. Considering the pedigree, it comes as no surprise that the wine lived up to their expectations, and so now, 10 years after the harvest, the 2004 is ready for release.
At Quinta do Noval the bud burst occurred mid-March followed by a quick flowering in the end of May due to high temperatures and lack of precipitation. …

Sfursat, 2004
Nino Negri, Valtellina
The Sfursat di Valtellina wine is a dry red “Passito” style wine and is made by making wine with dried grapes. The best bunches of Chiavennasca are selected and laid out on specially made mats in aerated purpose-built cellars to dry (similar to the process in Valpolicella for Amarone). The “breva” wind which blows through this region has historically assisted the production of the Sfursat wines. The grapes spend about 3 and a half months drying like this and towards the end of January (once the main winery tasks for the other wines are all finished) the grapes will have lost about 40% of their own weight, the sugars will have concentrated and the signature passito aroma will be present. …
