This Year in History: Fun Fact: Long-running children's animated television series Peppa Pig premieres.
Eurovision Winner: Ukraine with the song "Wild Dances" by Rusiana
Born in this Year: Millie Bobby Brown, a British actress, who gained recognition for playing Eleven in the Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things
    Top Grossing Movie: Shrek 2

Bordeaux: The 2004 wine vintage marked a return to a more classic Bordeaux vintage. The wines are more traditionally styled, and will make fine drinking for many cellars. The vintage seems a little under-rated compared with 2003 and the wines represent good value.

Italian: Produce of Piemonte in 2004 is very promising with few extremes of weather and well balanced wines. In Tuscany, the year was an exceptionally good vintage, central Italy’s equivalent of the perfect growing season that France experienced in 2005.

Portugal: The 2004 vintage was not generally declared, but some wonderful single quinta vintages were bottled. These 2004 Vintage Ports show an intense deep purple-red colour, a factor that was strongly influenced by the August rains that softened the skins and allowed for better colour extraction. The nose is lifted and fresh, again thanks to the cooler August weather. The taste is rich, firm and with good acidity and fine peppery tannins. These wines are most attractive and will age extremely well, making them an ideal 21 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

Spain: A very good year, especially for Rioja, with wines that should last well.

    Chateau La Lagune, 2004

An outstanding 2004 bordeaux wine from Chateau La Lagune.
"The 2004 and offerings from La Lagune are the finest back-to-back vintages they have produced in over fifteen years. Kudos to the Frey family, who also purchased the Rhone Valley flagship firm of Paul Jaboulet-Aine in 2005. Their daughter, Caroline Frey, is the oenologist at La Lagune. The sexy, up-front, evolved 2004 La Lagune exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue as well as big nose of cedar, spice box, black cherry jam, licorice, and smoke. Savory, broad, ripe, and low in acidity, it is a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on.

    Chateau Lynch-Bages, 2004

    Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
    *** 92 Points Robert Parker ***
    Half Bottle 37.5cl

An outstanding 2004 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Lynch-Bages.

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. This has a noticeably clear, deep garnet colour. The nose is very clean and correct although it lacks a little complexity and flair: straightforward black fruits, cedar and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate shows a little hardness at first, but softens with aeration and soon adopts a more succulent texture with ripe black cherries, Doris plum and bilberry. Certainly this is a well balanced Pauillac packed full of ripe tannins with a crisp poised finish of black plum, cedar and cassis.

    Fleur Cardinale, 2004

Rather shy nose to start that takes some coaxing and then aromas of red plum, boysenberry, cassis, fennel seed, cedar and suede unfurl. Lovely nose! Full bodied, dry and still surprisingly tannic on the palate, but good fruit extract and pitched acidity. The flavours are all deep red and black fruits, lots of black plum, a bit of bramble, charred oak, sous bois and chalk. Very smooth and nicely integrated. Finishes long, juicy and with lingering fruit. No where near past its prime. Drinking beautifully right now! (Cellar Tracker Review - 2021).
