Description
2004 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
96 points Wine Spectator
Outer quote mark Amazingly refined, with a pure, silky current of raspberry ganache and cassis flavors that glides along supple tannins. Hints of mocha, mineral and garrigue check in on the long, pure finish. Has serious structure for the long haul. All about balance and finesse. Drink now through 2030. *Highly Recommended, #11 Top 100 Wines of 2006* (JM) Inner quote mark (11/2006)
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Outer quote mark The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape has drunk well for most of its life and has tons of charm. Sweet cherries, kirsch, olive, spice, cured meats and licorice all emerge from this mature, elegant and layered Chateauneuf du Pape that's ideal for drinking over the coming 7-8 years. Drink through 2024. (JD) Inner quote mark (9/2015)

Outer quote mark Seeming to always show well, the 2004 Clos des Papes is a textbook, classically styled Châteauneuf that boasts gorgeously complex aromas (spice, licorice, saddle leather, kirsch), medium body, a silky, elegant texture, and plenty of length on the finish. While open and evolved aromatically and drinking beautifully, this should continue to hold for another decade. Inner quote mark (9/2011)

Outer quote mark Deep ruby. Pungent spice and floral notes accent bright red berry and cherry aromas. Deep, fleshy and sweet, with musky underbrush and garrigue adding complexity to the bright, intense red berry flavors. Very rich, in fact one of the more powerful wines of the vintage, with excellent depth and sweetness. The finish is chewy and strikingly long. Avril compares this one to 1995 in quality. Jancis Robinson
Outer quote mark Perfumed violet and mushroom on the nose with sweet coffee scent and still-youthful redcurrant fruit on the palate. The tannin still has some fierceness on the palate, which gives a firm handshake on the finish. That tannin seems to have longer to go before it integrates fully with the rest of the wine. Drink now-2034. (RH) (10/2017)
