In 1967, the gods favored Italy, blessing both Tuscany and Piedmont with an exceptionally fine vintage often touted as the "vintage of the decade". Bordeaux was also good but a touch on the light side, with the best wines being from Pomerol. Burgundy was similar. Port was also reasonably good, but it was really Italy’s year. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 58 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first scheduled colour television broadcasts from six transmitters covering the main population centres in England began on BBC2 for certain programmes, the first being live coverage from the Wimbledon Championships. Bordeaux: The 1967 vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.
Italian: 1967 Italian wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.
Portugal: Making a great wine gift for any birthday or anniversary, the 1967 port vintage is a very good vintage that was somewhat overshadowed by the exceptional 1966. It was declared by about 15 shippers. The 1967 ports showed well at recent tastings; they have good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

So complete, so much at the height of its powers, so dense yet fresh.I couldn't help thinking of that ad for menthol cigarettes - 'pure as mountain stream' was the slogan, wasn't it? It is medium ruby with some amber/orange colour at the edges, possessing a light-intensity, fragrant bouquet suggestive of berry fruit and oak. Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. The palate displays a smooth, silky texture and finishes with a burst of rich mellow flavour. The finish is long and elegant. A, finely constituted port that is drinking well now but with careful cellaring it will hold for a few years.

Macon, 1967

Macon is the name for the red and white wines which come from the Mâconnais section of Burgundy, France. This region is the most southerly in Burgundy, and also the largest. There are 42 villages in the Mâconnais region, broken out into seven designations: Macon, Macon Superieur, Macon Village, Pouilly Fuissé, Pouilly Loche, Pouilly Vinzele, and Saint Veran. The majority of wines from Macon are red wines, using the gamay noir, pinot noir, and pinot gris grapes. These are light wines, and should be drunk young. They go well with red meats and mild cheeses.
