Description
A rare vintage Madeira magnum from Blandy's 1981 harvest, offering rich, sweet complexity. Perfect as a special birthday or anniversary gift and a fine wine for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes:
This exceptional 1981 Malmsey Madeira from Blandy's displays a deep amber hue with green reflections, crystalline and bright. The nose is exuberant, featuring a characteristic bouquet of exotic wood, toasted confectionery, candied fruits, spices, and subtle smoked notes. On the palate, it is sweet, smooth, and dense, with good concentration and excellent freshness. The experience culminates in a long aftertaste of brandy, spices, and honey.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decanting will help remove any deposit that may have occurred in bottle over time. Serve chilled at 12–14°C. This vintage Malmsey Madeira pairs exceptionally well with rich desserts such as dark chocolate torte, caramelized pear tart, or blue cheese. Its sweetness and acidity also complement foie gras and roasted nuts, making it a versatile choice for various culinary experiences.
Cellaring Potential:
This wine is already nearly five decades old and drinking beautifully now, but its structure ensures it will remain vibrant for years to come. Store upright in a dark, fresh and dry room with constant temperature, ideally no higher than 16ºC.
Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine for over 200 years. The Blandy's are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.

Reviews
Deep amber-red in colour; lifted, toasted and singed on the nose, really rather wonderful, this sings from the glass; gentle honeyed sweetness, super-concentrated mid-palate, so pure yet complex too with a toasty-savoury back drop, rich (100g/l residual sugar) but the acidity running through leads to a vibrant finish. Nothing soupy about this: wonderful precision and definition.
