1976 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port - The color of this was amazing dark, being solid black with a tawny colored rim around the outside. I can’t ever remember seeing a color like this on this old VP. The nose was very gummy and thick with a floral aspect similar to the elderberry flower. Very reducted on the palate with thick tar, raisins, and green stems. Yet it was still tannic at the same time. The finish was moderate with a rich mint aspect to it. While good in its own right, served blind this could have easily been mistaken for a lighter style PX Sherry. An extremely dry winter was followed by a hot summer causing springs and wells to dry up for the first time in living memory. …

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it.

LBV's display the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.

Vintage Port

The 1975 Cockburn has a huge nose of chocolate oranges and marmalade but with an interesting twist of rose perfume. Slighltly hollow entry, slow to develop in the mouth but patience rewards with lovely fruit and plenty of bitter orange. The 1975 vintage is massively underrated, languishing in the shadows of the great 1970 and 1977 vintages. The Ports produced are lighter in style than other declarations but represent tremendous value. The Taylor's 1975 Vintage Port is no exception. Our tastings over the past few years have shown this wine consitently has a good colour in the glass and a mature nose. It has good structure and backbone that is typical of Taylors. It is a touch spirity, with some gentle, stony, red fruits. On the palate there is an immediately apparent sweetness which persists through to the finish.
