It could be argued that 2017 was the year when natural disaster reigned supreme and climate change well and truly reared its ugly head. However, there are good wines to be had – particularly when it came to the sweet wines of Sauternes and Tokaji, the whites of Alsace, Germany and Austria, and the fortified wines of Port.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
  • Quevedo 2017 Vintage Port
  • Quinta da Devesa 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port
  • Bourgogne 2017 Grand Vin de Borgogne Burgundy

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The world’s largest dinosaur footprint was discovered. The 5.5 foot (1.7 meter) dinosaur footprint was discovered in Kimberley, Western Australia.
Eurovision Winner: Portugal with the song "Amar Pelos Dois" by Salvador Sobrai.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi

Portugal: We are pleased to announce that the major port houses have declared the 2017 Port Vintage. Extremely rare, this is the Symington family's first ever consecutive declaration and follows the acclaimed 2016 Vintage. This is a milestone moment in port history and is the result of two very different but extremely high-quality years for port in the Douro.

Warmer, drier conditions than usual resulted in an early harvest of small, compact bunches of grapes in excellent condition, with yields amongst the lowest of the century so far, 20% below the 10-year average. The resulting wines are characterised by extraordinary intensity, concentration and structure, combined with stunning aromas and freshness. Their quality and fantastic potential mean that we believe 2017 will long be remembered as a year of incredible wines.

Given the very low-yielding year, the 2017 Vintage Port is the smallest declaration of the 21st century, with en primeur volumes approximately a third less than in 2016! So far, we have secured en primeur ports from Taylors, Fonseca, Croft, Grahams, Grahams’s Stone Terraces, Smith Woodhouse, Cockburns. Dow, Vesuvio, Quevedo, Palmer, Pocas, Vesuvio Capella, Noval, Noval Nacional, Niepoort and Warres. We are working to build the most comprehensive list ever offered!

    Tasting Note
A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish.

    Gaja, 2017

Alteni di Brassica, Sauvignon Blanc, Langhe

The small number of bottles released contributes to the prestige of Alteni di Brassica, the Sauvignon produced by the "king of Barbaresco" Angelo Gaja, proving the company's stratospheric level of quality also in the production of white wines. Alteni di Brassica is obtained from Sauvignon grapes grown in the Serralunga area, vinified in small French oak barrels, and offers a warm golden color, typical fruity and floral aromas, an enchanting freshness and a delicate acidity. We can pamper it for a long time in our cellar, and when we decide to uncork it, it will be exciting to taste it, first in purity, and then together with fish delicacies, raw, cooked or smoked.

    Hooper's Port, 2017

    Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV)

Hooper's 2017 Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port is a distinguished fortified wine from Portugal's Douro Valley. LBV ports are crafted from a single year's harvest and aged in oak casks for four to six years before bottling, allowing them to develop rich and complex flavors.

Tasting Notes: This 2017 LBV presents a deep ruby hue with aromatic notes of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and plums, complemented by subtle hints of spice and dark chocolate. On the palate, it offers a harmonious blend of fruit sweetness and well-integrated tannins, leading to a smooth, lingering finish.

Serving Suggestions: Best enjoyed slightly chilled, between 16°C and 18°C.

    La Spinetta, 2017

    La Spinetta, Piedmont
    Barbaresco Gallina
    ***95 Points James Suckling***

La Spinetta is one Piedmont’s iconic modern wineries having forged an enviable reputation over the last two decades. La Spinetta was founded in 1977 by Giuseppe Rivetti who established the original winery at Castagnole Lanze. Since then it is the second generation, spearheaded by Giorgio Rivetti, that has put La Spinetta on the map with the development of vineyards and estates, talented winemaking and an endless desire to try new things.

La Spinetta started in 1977 but its modern reputation was made in 1995 with the introduction of La Spinetta’s now famous Barbaresco (Gallina). In 2000 La Spinetta bought land in Barolo and set up a brand new winery to produce their Campè Barolo.

    La Spinetta, 2017

    La Spinetta, Piedmont
    Barbaresco- Starderi
    ***96 Point- James Suckling***

In 1996 we acquired the Starderi vineyard, which is located on the hills just behind those of Gallina.
Despite the two vineyards being geographically in the vicinity of one another, they hold very distinct characteristics which are determined by the crucial differences in microclimate, exposure and terrain. The Tanaro river, which flows at the bottom of the valley, affects the climate by mitigating both the extreme winters and the drastic hot summers.

Starderi always produces wines which express a rich character while maintaining great elegance. This difference is pronounced in the aromas: Starderi shows mainly hints of red berries and ripe fruit.

    Massolino, 2017

    Massolino Serralunga, Barolo, Piedmont
    95 - Wine Enthusiast
    *** 17/20 Points- JancisRobinson.com ***
    *** 92 Points- Wine Advocate ***

The 2017 Massolino Barolo grapes come from different vineyards and this gives them a broad and variable spectrum of perfumes, ranging from tempting spicy notes to those of a sweeter, floral and fruity nature.
Flavour: a variety of sensations, with a full-bodied, classic and well structured wine which ages well and perfectly represents the important character of our land. It is best to decant and serve it at temperatures between 18-20°C.
It achieves its best expression when served with red meats, particularly game, and with dishes dressed with truffle. It is also excellent with fresh egg pasta and meat sauce, and with risotto, as well as medium-mature cow’s milk and goat’s milk cheeses.

    Massolino, 2017

    Massolino - Barolo Margheria, Piedmont
    ***96 - Wine Enthusiast***
    ***93 Points- Wine Advocate***

The Cru is located in Serralunga d'Alba, at an altitude of around 280 metres above sea level. It occupies an area of about one and a half hectares.
Purchased by our family in the 1970s, Margheria is one of the most celebrated MGA in Serralunga.
With south-westerly exposure, the average age of the vines is around 40 years.
The soil composition gives the wines elegance, with mineral and spicy notes accompanied by potency and longevity.
Barolo DOCG Margheria draws much of its character from calcareous soil, with a slightly higher percentage of sand than in our other subzones. Made for the first time in 1985, it has great ageing potential, like the great Barolo wines of Serralunga.

    94 Points Wine Advocate

To Produce Barolo DOCG Parussi, Massolino left the confines of Serralunga, choosing a vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Thanks to the characteristics of Nebbiolo, a grape variety capable of capturing the differences in microclimate and soil composition and translating them into sensations, the result astonished us. Structured, important, austere.
Altitude: 290 m above sea level.

Average age of vines: 40 years.

    Massolino- Barolo DOCG Parafada.
This perfectly embodies the spirit of Serralunga. Its grapes come from our oldest vineyard, planted with vines that are about sixty years old.

Appearance: deep garnet red with bright hues which naturally evolve with age.

Bouquet: intense, very complex, offering a wide range of notes; with remarkable red fruit combined with floral and spicy hints. Especially after a few years of ageing, this Barolo shows all the elegance and charm that only Nebbiolo grapes can offer.

Flavour: robust, rich and austere. It perfectly reflects the great complexity of the soil in Serralunga d’Alba.

    Quinta de la Rosa, 2017

    Vintage Port, DOC Douro

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports.

Christian Seely (MD Noval) believes the 2017s "to be exceptional":

“I consider these wines to be among the best that I have known during my time at Quinta do Noval. The decision to declare them was a very easy one. As is well known, at Quinta do Noval, we do not hesitate to make small declarations of our Vintage Ports even in years which are not being generally declared, provided that the quality is excellent. But the 2017 is clearly an exceptional year which I believe will be remembered as one of the historic Vintage Port declarations of Quinta do Noval.
