The 2010 vintage is a year for great reds from France and Italy. Many are likely to be making spectacular drinking now and the best examples are likely to develop even further.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Calem 2010, Vintage Port
  • Burmester 2010 Quinta do Arnozelo Vintage Port
  • Chateau Haut Batailley 2010 Paulliac 5th Growth Classification

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, was officially opened to the public.
Eurovision Winner: Germany with the song "Satellite" by Lena.
Top Grossing Movie: Toy Story 3

Bordeaux: The 2010 for Bordeaux is widely hailed as a great vintage. The grapes were so laden with all the ingredients needed to make fine wine that there was no need for excessive intervention on the part of the winemaker; the best producers maintained a very light touch on the tiller and produced some outstanding wines. These would make a great 15 year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

Italian: This vintage in Italy will be remembered as a good quality vintage, but with tiny production quantities. Early rain and late ripening sun just before harvest contributed to a good quality crop, especially for the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape used for Barolo wines.

Portugal: After three very dry years, the winter of 2009-2010 saw an extraordinary change, with heavy rains for six months in a row. The viticultural year progressed well until July and August, when there was not one drop of rain. Temperatures in excess of 35ºC throughout most of August slowed the maturation cycle, as the vines cannot photosynthesise and mature the grapes properly in conditions of continued extreme heat. As a result the harvest began 5 days later than usual, but was conducted under mostly perfect conditions with a few welcome light showers in early September and only one overnight rainfall in early October.

    Toro Albalá

POLEY FINO PASADO 15 Year Old, Montilla-Moriles | 50cl Bottle
    *** 91 Points Robert Parker ***

The Fino 15 Year by Toro Albalá is a premium dry sherry-style wine from the Montilla-Moriles region of Spain. This wine is unique because it is made using Pedro Ximénez grapes, unlike most Finos which are made from Palomino. Toro Albalá is a highly respected winery, known for its extensive aging processes and its commitment to traditional methods.

    Tasting Notes:
Golden in colour with copper and greenish highlights. Intense and piercing aroma with notes of almonds, yeast, and green apples, with a briny, saline quality typical of Fino sherry. The long aging of 15 years imparts more complexity, depth, and concentration of flavours than younger Finos.

Red and black fruit in the aroma, with much youth, blackberry compote. Very attractive in the mouth, elegant and with a beautiful presence, it proves very lively and fresh with citrus notes to mark presence. Will mature over the next 10-15 years.

    Food Pairing
The association of Vintage Port with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton is one of the great classic food and wine combinations. The soft buttery texture, mellow character and piquancy of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerfully majestic flavours of the Vintage Port.

    De Loach, 2010

    Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
    90/100, Wine Review Online

A classically styled Pinot Noir using ancient Burgundian techniques. This superb example of Russian River valley Pinot Noir was created completely by hand in small open-top fermenters using native yeasts. The wine was then aged in fine Burgundian barrels.

Critic tasting note: "De Loach’s 2010 Pinot Noir is noteworthy for its sophistication and food-friendly character. With whiffs of smoke and earthiness in addition to plenty of red fruit, plus sweet, grainy tannins and a satisfyingly long finish, this is a wine that is definitely worth seeking out, especially the price is relatively modest compared to many comparably stylish California Pinot Noirs.

    Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, 2010

    Gewürztraminer, Hengst Grand Cru, Alsace

The Hengst Grand Cru enjoys an old reputation for being the place to grow Gewurztraminer. The combination of a high lime content calcareous soil, some marl, a warm and dry setting, but not too precocious, provide the best conditions possible for this difficult grape variety. It was very saddening to see these old vines being hailed early July and in consequence, loose about half the crop. Perhaps the very small crop also allowed producing this wine? Who knows, but the result was a beautiful crop of dense, bright orange coloured grapes (modern clones are dark pink/red but less interesting). Interestingly, this wine fermented in two times, only finishing at the end of the 2011 harvest with a medium off dry sweetness.

    Sangiovese, 2010

    Toscana IGT, Giordano

Good-quality Sangiovese is prized for its high acid, firm tannins and balanced nature. Savory flavors of dark cherries and black stone fruit are characteristic, and may be backed by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. The use of oak has become more popular and this coaxes richer flavors from the grapes, tending toward plum and wild raspberry.
