The 1997 vintage was not a good year for dry Bordeaux but it was a sweet success for its little sister, Sauternes. The real star of the vintage was Italy with both Piedmont and Tuscany producing some excellent wines. Port also enjoyed a great vintage and will offer some very good drinking today.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Quevedo 1997 Colheita Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1997 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Quinta Das Carvalhas 1997 Vintage Port
  • Chateau Cos dEstournel 1997 St Estephe 2nd Growth Classification
  • Chateau Gloria 1997 St Julien

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The Simpsons became the longest-running animated television series.
Eurovision Winners: UNITED KINGDOM!!! "Love Shine a Light" by Katrina and the Waves
    Top Grossing Movie: Titanic

Bordeaux: The 1997 wines of Bordeaux are characterised by being attractive, soft and user-friendly with broad appeal. They have been quick to mature and, except for the most concentrated wines, should be drunk within the next few years.

Italian: 1997 was undoubtedly a great vintage for Italian wines. Like the 1982 and 1990 Bordeaux vintages, it will have its critics because of its extreme style, but if wine is a beverage of pleasure, this vintage offers extraordinary wines.

Portugal: 1997 was one of the great port vintages of the decade and marked a general declaration of vintage. The vintage is characterised by full-bodied wines that will be at their best now, but will remain at their peak for at least another 20 or 30 years if stored with care. A 1997 Vintage Port would make a great 28 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year.

    Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997

    New

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux

Deep garnet color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

The 1997 Angludet performed freakishly well in my tastings. It reveals a deep purple color, and gobs of chewy, fat, blackberry and mocha-tinged cherry fruit. Chateau Leoville Las Cases, 1997

St Julien, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux
    Magnum Bottle

Léoville Las Cases is the most legendary wine of Saint-Julien: on a quality par with the Médoc's first growths, without the hefty price premium to match. It is a prime example of a Bordeaux 'super-second' - a second growth operating at a first growth level. Léoville Las Cases is also one of the largest, oldest and most picturesque of the Médoc's classified Bordeaux growths. Grapes are fermented at lower than average temperatures, which is partially responsible for the wines displaying some of the most exotic aromas and aromatic richness in the Médoc.

Château Léoville Las Cases, situated in the esteemed Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France, stands as a beacon of excellence and tradition in the world of fine wine.

    Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1997

    Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux

    *** 88 Points - Neil Martin Wine Journal ***

    Reviews:
"This has a superb nose, very lifted and well-defined, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke and a touch of burnt toast. Just soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied, ripe tannins, beautiful balance and poise with a sense of controlled opulence towards the finish. It comes across very natural, black cherries, blueberry, a touch of orange zest. This is certainly an over-performing wine for the vintage and shows better than previous bottles, although it did fade a little when returning after 15 minutes in the glass. Drink now-2015. Tasted September 2009.

    D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1997

    Tinta Negra (dry style)

The founders of D’Oliveiras were visionaries that saw the true value of Madeira Wine: its ability to improve over time. D’Oliveiras is the only Madeira Wine company that owns Madeira Wine bottles and barrels from as far as the 1850’s that can still be commercially purchased. Bottled and painted by hand, this 1997 has been aged for 22 years in old French oak barrels in the 17th century wine lodge in the heart of old Funchal.

This unusual 1997 Tinta Negra Madeira was vinified in a dry style, revealing a fine and precise aroma, tempered by the strong presence of dried fruits and lightened and spiced by generous volatile acidity.

Graham 1997 Single Harvest Tawny Port: This wine represents the beginning of a journey, from apprentice to cellar master. It celebrates deep knowledge of the vineyard and the mastery of tasting, essential requirements for crafting the exceptional wood-aged Ports of Graham’s.

At the harvest of 1997, Graham’s current Director of Winemaking, Charles Symington, was an apprentice to his father, Peter. Although extraordinary wines were produced that year, bottled as Vintage Port, Peter selected some of the best for extended wood aging.
