Description
We are delighted to offer a selection of 1947 Tuke Holdsworth which has recently been taken from a Yorkshire cellar where it has been stored for over 70 years.
The Tuke Holdsworth 1947 Vintage Port is a beautifully matured port that has aged gracefully, showcasing a unique balance of rich fruit, spice, and tertiary notes, with incredible longevity. The colour is a deep, rich garnet that has lightened at the edges with age, showing some brick-red hues. On the nose there is a rich complexity: The wine opens with layers of dried fruits (fig, apricot, prune, raisin), tobacco, and dark chocolate. Nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove notes are prominent are also prominent. With age, it has developed earthy, leathery tones and a subtle floral edge, reminiscent of violets. Despite its age, it retains great structure and depth, with a silky, luscious mouthfeel.
Tuke Holdsworth is a very old and respected Port house whose origins date back to 1650 when the company, best known as Hunt, Roope and Co Ltd., was founded by Devon families Newman, Roope, Holdworth, and Teage. Originally the company was centered around fishing where fish were landed at Dartmouth, salted and exported to Portugal where they were bartered for wine. Gradually the company expanded, acquired vineyards and went through many name changes as partners married and died. In the mid 1800's Hunt and Roope became well known for their Ports which were sold under the brands "Hunt' and 'Tuke Holdsworth'. In 1956 the company was purchased by Ferreira (now itself part of Sogrape) who continued to market Port under the Tuke Holdsworth brand until 2003.
