Jacob Gerhardt Neirsteiner Schlosskellerein, 1980
Jacob Gerhardt Neirsteiner Schlosskellerein, Auslese Eiswein
Sweet White Wine
The 1980 Eiswein is a sweet dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing for a more concentrated grape juice to develop.
The high residual sugar concentration give these wines great ageing properties - we tasted this bottle over two days. Served chilled from the fridge after a 2 hour decant. The colour is a mid-amber with green tinge around the rim of the glass. Oxidative notes on the nose, burnt molasses apricots, apple jam, tertiary notes and fruits. On the palate there is characteristic eiswein acidity a little'tart' bitterness. …

Kopke, 1979
Colheita Port

Gold Award- International Wine Challenge
Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.
Review:
Intense amber coloured. Presents a complex and rich bouquet of aromas where stands out the dried fruits. On the taste it is distinct, balanced and harmonious. Tannins elegantly combined which persists in the delicious finish.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1979
Quinta da Cavadinha
The 1979 Vintage Port from Warre's is seriously attractive. After 4 hours of decanting, it had opened up nicely with lots of fig-like fruits. The palate is rich and infused with age elements with a soft and rich fruit still well to the fore. The fruit is enjoying a late middle to early old age period. No need to drink up yet but age elements will begin to dominate from here on in. If you want fruit then drink now. A fine example of a well aged single-quinta port with a deft Warre's touch of assured wine making showing through the full fourty years from 1979.
Old vines make up a very high proportion of the vineyard, …

Delaforce, 1978
Quinta da Corte Vintage port
Review in the Port Forum
"Pale auburn in colour, with a rose rim. Floral honey on the nose, pleasant but not strong. Dusty sweet redcurrant jelly on the tongue, with the tannins showing through as a gentle dusty persistence. Floral and rose-water flavours in the mouth, not a heavyweight, but perfectly pleasant drinking. Nice redcurrant aftertaste, with an enjoyable slight bitterness to the finish." AHB Port Forum 2010

Niepoort Port, 1978
Vintage Port
"Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match." (James Suckling, Vintage Port).
Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port.
Vintage Port must be bottled within two years of the harvest date and be 100 per cent wine from that harvest. …

Messias, 1977
Colheita Port, Douro
bottled in 1991
Colheita Ports like the 1977 Messias are aged in oak barrels for extended periods, often more than thirty years, which allows them to develop a distinctive character and smoothness over time. This aging process enhances their depth and complexity, making them highly prized among Port enthusiasts.
Tasting notes
Tawny colour with amber reflections, indicating extended oak barrel aging. Its nose features dried fruit aromas, nut notes, complex spice aromas, and subtle caramel, toffee, and vanilla notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a smooth texture, with rich flavors of caramelized nuts, dried fruits, and butterscotch. …

Fonseca Port, 1977
Vintage Port
Excellent provenance
Damaged label
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. …

Blandys, 1976
Verdelho Madeira
Tasting Notes
Clear and bright coppery brown colour with golden nuances and greenish reflections. On the nose it´s very characteristic, exuberant and very ethereal, full of balsamic notes, spices and dry fruits. On the palate it´s very powerful, fresh and concentrated with a long aftertaste and retronasal full of balsamic notes, exotic woods and old rum.
In the 17th century Verdelho was considered the most representative variety in Madeira Island and some even say that may be originated from the island. Verdelho produces a wine must with moderated sugar levels, noticeable acidity and produces a mediumdry style of Madeira wine. …

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1976
Domaine du Grand Tunel - E. Jeune
An outstanding wine still with a deep red colour. This has really strong bouquet with lovely packing in it; there is charm in the soft red fruits, but power and depth in behind, via some tobacco and rum: all comes in a silken air. This is rich on the palate, backed by good structure and tannin to keep it in shape. Very good length.

Dalva, 1975
Finest Reserve Tawny Port, DOC Douro
Tawny Port is made from premium blends of wines, sourced from the best vineyards that have been aged for years in oak casks. This art of blending, more than a technique, is steeped in centuries of old traditions passed down from one generation to another, as the “house style” of each Port wine family company.
Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine. …

Dow's, 1975
Vintage Port
Damaged label
The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port. …

Rebello Valente Vintage Port, 1975
Vintage Port Badly Damaged label
Robertson Bros were the shippers behind this brand, which was once one of the most reputable, though, since a fine 1970, very little Vintage Port bears the name.
Drink it alone for dessert. It is like a delicious piece of fruitcake. Medium red, with a roasted, chocolate, earthy nose, medium-bodied, with plenty of tannins and roasted, fruity flavours on the palate.

Barolo, 1974
Salvano Saverio
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Musar, 1974
Gaston Hochar, Bekaar Valley, Lebanon, Red Wine
Excellent Provenance. Library release form the cellars of Chateau Musar.
1974 Chateau Musar. This is a library release from the cellars of Ch. Musar where it has been stored until purchase by VWP in 2024.
Notes from Chateau Musar: A higher than usual alcohol content suggests more fermentable sugars in the grapes – something we weren’t to see again until many years later with the 2012 vintage, however unlike that year the 1974 was much more delicate in its youth and wasn’t to develop its character until a longer spell ageing in the Chateau Musar cellars at Ghazir has passed.
Tasting Notes
The colour is bright, even brilliant – of tile and ruby. An intensely powerful nose, gamey, minerally with grilled meats and spices. …
