The 2014 vintage was good overall. There are some fantastic wines available for both drinking now and cellaring but careful research and selection is probably beneficial. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 11 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
Palmer Port 2014 Colheita Bodegas Toro Albala Poley Fino Del Lagar En Rama 10 Year Barolo 2014 Gigi Rosso Riserva dellUlivo Ariona Domaine de Chevalier 2014 Graves Pessac Leogan This Year in History: Fun Fact: Prince Harry launches the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style sporting championship for wounded soldiers.
Eurovision Winner: Austria with "Rise Like a Phoenix" Conchita Wurst
Top Grossing Movie: Transformers, Age of Extinction.
Bordeaux: Exceptionally cool, damp July and August but the vintage was saved by an unusually dry, warm September and October that (just about) ripened the grapes though autumn concentration has resulted in relatively high-acid wines. Reds have fragrance, medium body and supple tannins but are not for long term cellaring. "jancisrobinson.com"
Italian: In Piedmont the quality of the grapes was high due to a mild winter, early spring and warm summer but production is down by approximately 10% as some areas of Barolo were hit by hail which damaged the Dolcetto grapes. A warm and dry September was especially beneficial for late-ripening grapes such as Nebbiolo and Barbera.
In Tuscany a mild winter and spring led to early flowering, a cool summer impacted the development of the vines but the warm and dry September led to an increase of production by about 10% and good quality wines.
Portugal: Rain caused significant damage in the first half of the year, then a cool August didn’t help matters. Yields will be low, quality is not remarkable, and vintage declarations unlikely for most producers apart from Quinta Do Noval and Churchill's who declared a small batch of their 2014 ports.
Sauternes: A triumph for Sauternes in this vintage, with some botrytis in September and plenty in late October. Some observers are even calling it the best vintage since the turn of the century."jancisrobinson.com"

Palmer Port, 2014
Colheita Port, Douro
Exclusive to Vintage Wine & Port.
The 2014 Palmer colheita Port is a type of tawny port wine made from a single vintage and aged in wood for at least seven years before being bottled. The 2014 Colheita Port, therefore, would have been aged in casks many years before being bottled.
Tasting Notes:
This Port has a deep tawny colour and a nose of rich and complex aromas of dried fruits, nuts, caramel, and spices. On the Palate the Port is smooth and well-balanced with flavours of fig, raisin, walnut, and toffee. There can be a hint of vanilla and a touch of spice due to the oak ageing. …

Barolo, 2014
Gigi Rosso - Riserva dell'Ulivo - Arione, Piedmont
*** MAGNUM 1,5 Litre- IN ORIGINAL WOODEN CASE ***
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.
Gigi Rosso winery sits in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo land. It carries the name of its founder Gigi, one of Barolo’s and Langhe pioneers. …

Barolo, 2014
Massolino - Riserva - Vigna Rionda, Piedmont
*** 97 Points- Wine Advocate ***
Vigna Rionda is a unique Barolo, impossible to describe in just a few lines and hard to compare with others, even those from the Serralunga area. A wine capable of complexity, longevity and structure, which come together with unparalleled elegance. A little patience is required for it to reach its full potential, which is why it stays in our cellars until its sixth year, the only wine in our range to do so, when it is released as a Riserva.
We recommend decanting and serving at a temperature of 18-20°C.
The most prominent element in the history of our estate, Vigna Rionda is one of the most sought-after and prestigious crus in the area. …

Brunello di Montalcino, 2014
Albatreti
Small red berries and sour cherries are evident on the nose with elegant tobacco notes and a good dose of mediterranean herbs. Elegant and savoury on the palate this wine has profound structure.
From a 1.8 hectare site the wine is aged in oak for 3 years before another year in bottle prior to release.
If you're drinking this now we'd suggest decanting for at least an hour before hand and pairing with something hearty and rich, beef or game dishes with mushrooms and root veg would be a good place to start.
Albatreti is a 29ha property of which 5ha are under vine and 1.8ha dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino. …

Casa Ferreirinha `Tinta Francisca` Douro Red
This wine is deep ruby red in colour, with an intense aromas of balsamic, truffle, forest-floor and pine needles, along with notes of black pepper, asparagus and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it has firm tannins, a lively acidity, spicy notes of black pepper and a touch of saltiness on the long finish.
This producer, founded in 1952, is named after the legendary Porto matriarch Dona Antónia Ferreira. She was affectionately nicknamed ‘Ferreirinha’ by her countrymen, and Casa Ferreirinha, the first producer in the region dedicated to making light wines, pays homage to her memory. Chateau Talbot, 2014
St Julien, 4me Cru Classe
New Bordeaux arrivals
The 2014 Château Talbot from Saint-Julien is a solid vintage from this well-regarded Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru) estate. 2014 was considered a good year for Bordeaux, with favorable weather conditions late in the season contributing to good ripeness, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon, which plays a dominant role in the wines of Saint-Julien.
The blend for Château Talbot typically consists of around 60-70% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance made up of Merlot, and small percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
Aroma: Aromatic with classic Bordeaux notes of blackcurrant, plum, and cherry, accompanied by cedar, tobacco, and hints of graphite and herbs. …

Domaine de Chevalier, 2014
Graves Pessac-Leogan
***93 points- Wine Advocate***
The Domaine de Chevalier 2014 is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 30% Merlot. It has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, black plum, cigar ash and woodland scents, complex though not as intense as its white counterpart. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, quite firm tannin that underpin a classic Domaine de Chevalier that has just the right amount of austerity at this stage. Reserved perhaps, but it is beautifully knitted together with a lovely bay leaf tinged finish. Quintessential Domaine de Chevalier...which is what we all want. Neal Martin- Wine Advocate- Aug 2015
Château Domaine de Chevalier stands as an iconic wine estate located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation within Bordeaux, France. …

La Spinetta, 2014
La Spinetta - Barolo Campè, Piedmont
"This opens with aromas of toasted oak, weedy underbrush, crushed dill and a whiff of camphor. The firm palate is on the lean side, evoking tobacco leaf, star anise, powdered sage, oak and roasted coffee bean but it lacks fruit. Drying astringent tannins grip the close. " - Kerin O’Keefe
La Spinetta is one Piedmont’s iconic modern wineries having forged an enviable reputation over the last two decades. La Spinetta was founded in 1977 by Giuseppe Rivetti who established the original winery at Castagnole Lanze. Since then it is the second generation, spearheaded by Giorgio Rivetti, that has put La Spinetta on the map with the development of vineyards and estates, talented winemaking and an endless desire to try new things. …

Quinta de la Rosa, 2014
Vintage Port
Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.
The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.
It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports. …

Quinta do Noval, 2014
Vintage Port, Douro
Just 1000 cases declared by Quinta do Noval
Managing Director Christian Seely:
“I am extremely happy to be able to release Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2014.
We continue to follow our slightly eccentric path at Quinta do Noval. The fundamental principle for us is that if we have a wine that we believe is of the quality and personality required to be bottled as a Quinta do Noval Vintage, then we should bottle it and declare it, whether or not we declared a Vintage the year before, and even if the quantity of wine involved is very small. This led us to declare very small amounts of Quinta do Noval Vintage Port in 2012, 2013, even after the generally declared year of 2011. …
