Much of Europe suffered from both a wet start and a slightly cooler growing season than normal. However, overall, a very good year providing plenty of options for wines drinking now as well as many great wines with excellent potential for cellaring.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer 2013 Colheita Port
  • Quevedo 2013 Vintage Port Quinta Vale dAgodinho
  • Chateau Cos dEstournel 2013 St Estephe 2nd Growth Classification
  • Barolo 2013 Cantine Ascheri Giacomo Pisapola

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: Andy Murray wins the US Open Tennis Championship, the first British man to win a Grand Slam tournament since 1936.
Eurovision Winner: Denmark with the song "Only Teardrops" by Emmelie de Forest.
    Top Grossing Move: Frozen

Bordeaux: The 2013 Wine vintage offered no respite for the growers after two difficult vintages. There were plenty of challenges right from the start in this vintage – uneven and late flowering following a wet spring, often-violent hailstorms at the end of July and early August, a wet and warm September than meant an attack of rot just before harvest… you name it, the vineyards suffered it during the 2013 vintage. When harvest came around, exhausted winemakers then had to deal with warm but wet weather that in many instances meant they had to harvest early. All in all, a challenging year that rewarded those who were extremely vigilant, and didn’t try to push things too hard once the grapes were finally in the winery. The real success story in 2013 is with the winemaking – there were plenty of producers who worked exceptionally well with the vintage, taking their foot off the pedal and allowing the vibrancy of the fruit to shine through wherever possible. Anyone who tried to cover up unripe fruit with too much oak, or over-extraction, suffered. The best wines have a refreshing drinkability, relatively low alcohol levels, soft fruits and plenty of interest, but by and large this is a vintage to enjoy in the early to mid term.**Sourced from Decanter.com**

Italian: Piedmont: The 2013 wine vintage in Piedmont is of excellent quality. The year did not start well with Incessant rain during winter and spring delayed budbreak. From mid July temperatures shot up and remained high during August, albeit with cooler nights. September was very sunny and dry, but the growing cycle was still two weeks late, necessitating a delayed harvest. The prognosis is for a vintage similar in quality to the already legendary 2010s. Tuscany: Considered a ‘classic vintage’ due to harvest taking place at the beginning of October. (This used to be the norm but the previous two, much warmer, years brought harvests forward to the beginning of September.) A very cool wet spring delayed budbreak by an average of two weeks. A very wet May that encouraged widespread and continued spraying was followed by a cool June. A picture-perfect July, August and September saved the year, one that resulted in elegant, fresh wines. A promising vintage on the whole, with the wines of Montalcino expected to be exceptional. **Sourced by JancisRobinson.com**

Portugal: The 2013 port vintage produced some exceptional wines for those producers who harvested before the rain. For those who managed to gather the grapes, production quantities were tiny. 2013 was marked by a sunny and dry growing season. By the beginning of the harvest the quality potential was outstanding. Periods of rain during the harvest meant that much of this potential was not fully achieved, but some wonderful lots of high quality wine were made.

    Barolo, 2013

Gigi Rosso - Riserva dell'Ulivo - Arione, Piedmont
    *** MAGNUM ***
*** IN ORIGINAL WOODEN CASE ***

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Gigi Rosso winery sits in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo land. It carries the name of its founder Gigi, one of Barolo’s and Langhe pioneers.

    Barolo, 2013

Massolino - Riserva - Vigna Rionda, Piedmont
    *** 97 Points- Wine Advocate ***

Vigna Rionda is a unique Barolo, impossible to describe in just a few lines and hard to compare with others, even those from the Serralunga area. A wine capable of complexity, longevity and structure, which come together with unparalleled elegance. A little patience is required for it to reach its full potential, which is why it stays in our cellars until its sixth year, the only wine in our range to do so, when it is released as a Riserva.
We recommend decanting and serving at a temperature of 18-20°C

    Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 2013

    St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification
    ** 92 Points - The Wine Advocate **

Powered by its structure and texture, this complex wine is dense, structured and firm. Plenty of dry and taut tannins dominate at this stage, but it is also full of fruit. The wine will age over many years while not being one of those vintages that will mature forever: the fruitiness will see to that. Drink this impressive wine from 2025.

Château Cos d'Estournel is a prestigious wine estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France. Established in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, the estate is renowned for its grand architectural style, including the iconic pagodas that distinguish its winery.

    Vietti Barolo, 2013

    Vietti - Riserva Villero, Piedmont
99 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The Vietti 2013 Barolo Riserva Villero is a stunning wine, full of life, energy and beautiful complexity. This vintage opens in such a graceful manner, tickling the senses like a feather. With time, that initial softness begins to rise, and the wine grows in aromatic momentum and textural importance to take on magnificent fruit weight. It is soft, caressing and long. Tasted seven years after the harvest, this Riserva is expertly integrated with vibrant primary fruit, tangy acidity and non-intrusive tannins. These elements that make up the grand totality of the wine are carefully contained and chiseled down to a most elegant and beautiful common denominator.
