Despite some odd weather, the 2007 vintage was largely a success throughout the wine world – with the exception of dry Bordeaux. There should be a wide range of wines, particularly reds, from various regions around the world still drinking well now with the best likely to cellar for some years more.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer 2007 White Port
  • Quevedo 2007 Colheita Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 2007 Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Quinta Das Carvalhas 2007 Vintage Port
  • Blandys 2007 Malmsey Colheita Maderia
  • Chateau dIssan 2007 Cantenac Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

Bordeaux: The finest 2007 wines tend to be dark ruby-coloured with purple highlights, sweet, ripe berry fruit similar to black cherries and black currants, medium body, silky tannins, low acidity, and pure, round, charming personalities with good equilibrium. By and large, however, the wines lack density, structure, and serious long-term ageing potential. Most will be drinkable as soon as they are bottled, and should age surprisingly well for 10-15 years. Truthfully, most consumers will probably love the style of the vintage’s top wines because they are so flattering, seductive, and fruit-forward.

Portugal: The 2007 Port vintage was the first widely declared vintage since 2003; virtually every Port house that matters made a Vintage Port, attesting to the quality of the year. The growing season was preceded by a wet winter, which put plenty of moisture back into the soil after a lengthy period of dry conditions. Summer temperatures were relatively mild (unlike the torrid conditions in 2003, the last previous declared vintage). September and October weather was close to ideal so that the grapes enjoyed a lengthy hang-time under excellent conditions with full ripening of Turiga Francesa and Turiga Nacional, the two most important grape varieties. The quantities produced are small, so there is a high demand for them. There is little doubt that 2007 is a high class vintage, making a port from this year a great 18
year old wine gift for an anniversary this year.

    Taylor Fladgate, 2007

Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha Vintage Port, Douro
    ***96/100- Falstaff****

The 2007 Taylor Vargellas Vinha Velha is a more introverted Taylor’s Vintage, an earthy bouquet with touches of orange essence developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good backbone, quite reserved and composed at the moment. This is not a flamboyant Vinha Velha, but there is a very attractive, slightly biscuity quality towards the finish. Superb. The Vinha Vehla are five plots located in the heart of Quinta de Vargellas. The vines being between 80 and 120 years of age. Strict selection has led to a wine of stunning complexity, power and richness. This is one that will be at its peak 50 years hence.

    95 Points James Suckling
    ***92 Points Wine Spectator ***

This 2007 Vintage Port can be enjoyed young for its powerful fruit, but it is also designed to age for decades. Over time, the wine will develop more complex tertiary flavors such as dried fruits, nuts, and more pronounced spice.

    Tasting Notes
The 2007 Quinta Das Carvalhas is a very deep and black purple colour. A very concentrated and fruity aroma, with jammy, blackberries and plum notes. The great mouthfeel reveals all the complexity flavour of fruit, full-bodied and balanced wine with soft and velvety background and a long and lasting finish.

Reviews: "The 2007 Fonseca Vintage Port is opaque purple-colored with a high-class perfume of lavender, Asian spices, pencil lead, incense, and an amalgam of black fruits. On the palate it is voluminous with layered, succulent fruit, outstanding density, and excellent integration of tannin, acidity, and alcohol. The long finish and the wine’s impeccable balance suggest a lengthy evolution and a drinking window extending out to 2045. " Jay Miller, Wine Advocate.

    Warre's Vintage Port, 2007

    Vintage Port, Douro

    93 Points - Wine Advocate.

"The 2007 Warre Vintage Port is one of the stars of the vintage. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays an expressive bouquet of Asian spices, incense, lavender, blackberry, and fruitcake. Plush on the palate with outstanding volume, it exhibits a sense of elegance as well as power. Savory flavors, plenty of structure for the long haul, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish suggests two decades of cellaring are in order. This superb effort should still be drinking well in 2050." Pierre Rovani Wine Advocate.
