Overall, the 1977 vintage was far from great. The top reds, fortified and dessert wines from the best regions and producers should still be drinking well but careful research is still advisable.

Born in this Year: Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff, Cricketer, Retired English all-rounder known as "Freddie" who was named ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2004 and ICC Player of the Year in 2005. He finished his Test career with more than 3,000 runs and 200 wickets taken. He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year honor in 2005, the first cricketer to do so since Ian Botham in 1981.

Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing season in Bordeaux led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.
Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines - they are now fully mature but will still make good drinking today.
Portugal: The 1977 was a classic vintage, declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable and will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power. The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is an incredible wine from an outstanding vintage. Great plum red, vibrant. Fresh nose, clean fruit with delicate floral notes. A wine with great complexity of fruit – berry and spice, dense, luscious and concentrated, yet with a soft, delicate finish which belies the inner strength.
