Port stole the crown with a fantastic 1960 vintage. It was declared by all the major houses and the best examples are likely to still be drinking beautifully now. However, other parts of Europe fared less well, with Italy producing some good but some lack-luster wines. Bordeaux was also hit-and-miss with some good Sauternes and Barsac.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: ITV broadcasts the first live Football League match to be shown on television and the last for 23 years.
Eurovision Winner: France with the song "Tom Pillibi" by Jean-Claude Pascal
Top Grossing Movie: Spartacus
Bordeaux: The vintage suffered from two rain-filled months of August and September. The wines produced in 1960 were very delicate and light in Bordeaux and only the first growth and Grand Cru wines will now be drinkable. The great estates from Sauternes and Barsac produced some good sweet wines in what was generally a depressed decade for the region.
Italian: The 1960 is rated as an average vintage for Italian wines. Heavy-weight, longer lived wines from 1960 such as Barolo and Amarone are still drinking well - they still exhibit a good structure and have deep colour with rich intensity.
Portugal: The 1960 Port Vintage was outstanding and was declared by all of the major Port houses. Port wines from 1960 have now settled into glorious old Vintage Ports of the very highest quality. After more than 64 years bottle-ageing, these wines have a superb combination of lovely mature fruit combined with the elegance that only this length of time in bottle can give. An incredible wine gift for a birthday or anniversary, they will last for decades to come or offer a superlative drinking experience now.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1960
Sauternes Premiere Grand Cru Classe
Exceptional provenance - professionally stored since purchase
Tasted in April 2005. Light amber. It impressed from first drop with intense and deep nose of rasp honey and brown sugar. On the palate, it appeared very concentrated with candied fruit, delicious structure and sweet aftertaste. This was distinguished and enchanting wine with style, class and vitality. Should maintain all its goodies for additional 15 years. Review on Greatbordeauxwines.com Rating 94 points

Chateau Haut Brion, 1960
Pessac, Graves 1st Growth classification
A top class wine for the vintage. It is medium ruby with some amber/orange colour at the edges, possessing a light-intensity, fragrant bouquet suggestive of berry fruit and oak. On the palate, the flavours reveal fruit and concentration - very pleasant drinking from a wine of such age.

The 1960 Château Latour is a testament to its age and the estate’s commitment to producing quality wines even in difficult years. Offley Port, 1960
Boa Vista Vintage Port
Quinta Boa Vista (lit Beautiful View Vineyard) hints at the dramatic views enjoyed by one of the most renowned vineyards in the entire Douro valley
Boa Vista is the jewel in the Offley Forrester crown, which is one of the oldest Port Houses (1737) and rose to prominence under Joseph Forrester. He was a legendary figure in the history of port credited with mapping the upper regions of the Douro, only to be drowned in one of its rapids, allegedly weighed down by the weight of gold he had collected from his tenants. Forrester's life was devoted to improving the quality of port and in recognition of his endeavours the King of Portugal made him Baron Forrester. …

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1960
Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Unlabelled | Level in Neck
“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.” Christian Seely
The terroir: a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines and untouched by phylloxera, described as “attached to the soil of the Nation”. …

Marcel Trepout, 1960
Marcel Trépout, Armagnac
The 1960 Armagnac from Marcel Trepout is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.
