The last vintage of the '50s was legendary for Bordeaux, which produced a bounty of rich, velvety, sumptuous wines. These wines were known for their tannin and alcohol, and the very best should still be drinking well now. The Italian harvest was also very good but often eclipsed by shouldering vintages. The Port vintage failed to wow and went undeclared.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: British Empire Day becomes Commonwealth Day.
Eurovision Winner: Netherlands with the song "Een Beetje" by Teddy Scholten
Top Grossing Movie: Ben-Hur
Bordeaux: 1959 was one of the great vintages of the century producing wines that are full-bodied, extremely alcoholic and opulent, with high degrees of tannin and extract. Initially the wines were criticised for having low acidity, however over time the wines have matured more slowly than the great vintage of 1961 and now after six decades the wines surpass the 1961s in many cases. Well-stored 1959 wines are still at their peak and will remain so for years to come, making an excellent wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.
Italian: The 1959 Italian wine vintage was a very good vintage that has often been overlooked in favour of the outstanding 1958 and 1961 vintages. The wines produced exhibit a deep colour, rich intensity and have a good structure. The top quality Italian reds such as Barolo and Brunello are still drinking well today.
Portugal: The 1959 port wine vintage was a poor one. There were no declarations for vintage port and only a few single harvest colheitas were made.

Baron de Lustrac, 1959
Armagnac 1959 Vintage
Armagnac is a grape brandy from the Gascony region of South-Western France. Its closest relative is cognac, another grape brandy from an appellation located about 100 miles north of Armagnac. Armagnac even though it is related to and often confused with cognac, Armagnac is very different with regards to its grapes, terroir, distillation, élevage, blending, aromas, tastes and textures. In truth, France's two finest brandies made from wine are not very much alike at all.
Armagnac pre-dates cognac by about 150 years but never achieved the widespread sales figures that its relatives in the Charente obtained. …

This 1959 Wine from Solaria Jonica wine is an outstanding vintage wine and absolute "must have" for anyone celebrating a special Birthday or anniversary from this year. It is highly recommended by our wine buyer and many leading wine critics.
Review
"No, the vintage date of this wine is not an error. Just released, it is a selection of old-vine Primitivo grown south of Taranto and only now hitting the market. No one seems to know whether the fermentation was stopped by fortifying the wine or if it just stopped on its own as a result of the superlative richness of the must, but the fact remains that, with close to 14% of alcohol, it is as sweet as a great Recioto, a wine which it greatly resembles. …

Domaine et Terroirs du Sud, 1959
Domaine et Terroirs du Sud, Maury
96 points Vinous
This 1959 Maury may ultimately turn out to be Philippe Gayral's greatest find. It comes from the oldest parcels of Grenache Noir and Carignan and spent 40 years in wooden foudres. It has a lucid amber hue. The bouquet is utterly sublime: red plum, Hoisin, mulberry, burnt toffee, stewed Clementines and just a hint of VA giving it life. Wonderful! The palate is beautifully balanced with disarming fine, almost filigree tannins. Stewed red fruit, fig jam, tayberry, Moroccan spices and quince suffuse this Maury that has outstanding length and delineation. The 300 bottles produced are due to be released later this year. …

Inferno, 1959
Pelizzatti
Special Offer | Was £129 | Now £89
Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.
