The 1958 vintage gave Bordeaux a small, light, but not unpleasant vintage; however, most wines are more than likely to be past their prime. The Port vintage was good and partially declared, and Italy struck gold again with some fabulous Barolo and Brunello.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
Barolo 1958 Fontanafredda Madeira 1958 MMV Boal Madeira Wine Warres Vintage Port 1958 This Year in History: Fun Fact: First broadcast of the long-running BBC Television children's programme Blue Peter.
Eurovision Winner: France with the song " Dors Mon Amour" by Andre Ciaveau
Top Grossing Movie: South Pacific
Italian: 1958 was a good year for Italian heavyweights such as Barolo and Brunello, which were built to last. Well-stored examples of 1958 wines such as these still make very good drinking today, and would make great 57 year old wine gifts for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year.
Portugal: 1958 ports represent a good year with some fragrant and delicate Vintage Ports, despite the rather damp weather conditions throughout. This year was declared by some, but not all, of the major Port houses.

Barolo, 1958
Marchesi di Barolo
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Madeira, 1958
MMV - Boal - Bottled by Barbeito *
This is a rare and limited release of the 1958 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage.
Tasting Notes
The 1958 Boal is medium sweet as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Flavours of caramel, cacao, toffee, dates, roasted coffee, smoke, and raisin. While the texture of Bual Madeira is rich, it is high in acidity, making the wine less sticky than Port. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing with an extraordinarily long finish. …

Quinta do Noval, 1958
Vintage Port

Shipped by J Harvey and son
The spirit is clean with a gentle floral edge. There are dried fig, raisin, chocolate and liquorice smells. It is lacy and ethereal in the mouth. It has good cut and detail right through the palate and one is left with a wonderful inner mouth perfume once the wine is swallowed.

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins. This is a very individual and complex wine.
