1942 Wine and Port Vintage

This Year in History: Fun Fact: Pan American Airlines becomes the first commercial airline to have a flight go around the world.
Born in this Year: Muhammed Ali, Boxer, born Cassius Clay, he became a boxing icon as well as a peace activist and a philanthropist. He was known as "The Greatest," recording 56 career wins, 37 of them by knockout, in his 61 professional bouts.
Top Grossing Movie: Bambi

Bordeaux: The 1942 vintage produced good quality wines during a difficult harvest under wartime conditions. France was exceedingly fortunate in the matter of weather during the war. Never, certainly, in the last half century have the French vineyard districts known a comparable succession of dry summers or a higher average of good or creditable vintage years.

Portugal: This year was, despite WWII, declared by some shippers such as Graham's. Production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but those wines which have been cared for are still drinking well now. These would make an excellent 80 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary this year.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1942

Pauillac Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux

Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Château Lafite Rothschild, situated in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France, stands as one of the most illustrious wine estates globally, revered for its storied history and exceptional red wines. With a lineage tracing back to the 17th century, the estate's vineyards cover approximately 112 hectares, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grapes.

Graham's Port, 1942

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
In neck, badly chipped capsule, unlabelled

Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

tasting note year
This is a silky, classy, elegant, mature Vintage Port with a complex character of fruit on the nose and palate. Medium red with a lighter edge, delicate fresh raspberry and currant aromas, medium-bodied, with silky, elegant fruit flavours, medium tannins and a very sweet finish.

Janneau, 1942

Armagnac 1942 Vintage

The 1942 Janneau Armanac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.
