Overall, the 1966 vintage is considered largely very good, if not excellent, for much of the wine world. The year for Port, however, was fantastic and most major houses declared the vintage making it one of the best buys from the year – and it is likely to still be drinking well today.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Dows 1966 Vintage Port
  • Leacock 1966 Bual Madeira Wine
  • Irroy 1966 Rose Champagne
  • Sandeman 1966 Vintage Port
  • Spanna 1966 Castello di Lozzolo Berteletti Riserva
  • Chateau Brane Cantenac 1966 Margaux 2nd Growth Classification
  • Chateau dYquem 1966 Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
  • Vecchio Maniero 1966 Marchesi di Barolo

Bordeaux: 1966 was a very good wine vintage for Bordeaux. At the time the wines were tannic and had high acidity. Over the past four decades, the tannins have faded to make the wines more drinkable. The best quality wines such as Latour and Palmer are still in their prime even now and will remain so for many years to come. Other Bordeaux wines will remain good to drink.

Italian: 1966 produced a good vintage for Italian wines from Piedmont and Tuscany. Quality Italian reds such as Barolo and Brunello are still drinking well today.

Portugal: Making the perfect wine gift for anniversaries or birthdays, 1966 is an outstanding Port vintage of exceptional quality that was generally declared. Always overshadowed by the legendary 1963, this year is now recognised as being one of the very best post-war Vintage Ports. The wines are characterised by being long lasting with firm, perfect weight and balance. Most will outlast their 1963 counterparts and turn out greater in the long run.

    50cl Bottle

Exclusive to Vintage Wine and Port

This rare port-wine has been stored in seasoned oak casks since the 1966 harvest until bottling in 2019.

Tasting Notes: The 1966 Port from Palmer has a light oak colour with a verdant edge on the rim highlighting a colheita of exceptional age and quality. Much elegance on the nose with orange peel, walnuts, figs and a touch of honey. On the palate there is a lightness that is balanced by a good acidity. Messias, 1966

    Colheita Port, Douro
    Gold, Trophy, International Wine Challenge

Colheita Ports like the 1966 Messias are known for their exceptional aging potential. The extended aging in oak barrels allows the wine to develop complexity and a smooth, mellow character over time.

    Award tasting note
"Light mahogany with wide lemon rim, raisin dated and tangerine on the rich, warm nose, generous, profound but stylish on the palate with rich supple fruit and a flossy texture, savour & deep with lovely fleshing finish".

    Serving & Food Pairing
Colheita Ports are ready-to drink and do not require decanting. Best enjoyed slightly chilled at 12-13ºC they will work wonders if pairing with treacle tart, crème brulee or nut based desserts, like hazelnut praline.

    Croft Port, 1966

    Vintage Port
    Unlabelled | Embossed Plastic Capsules

Tasting Notes: A slightly deeper core compared to the ’63. The nose is very ripe with mulberry and tobacco with a hint of balsam, just lacking a little freshness and delineation. The palate is similar to the ’63, very well-balanced and cohesive, a slightly viscous texture, fresh and surfeit with joie-de-vivre and vivacity. Wild strawberry, lemongrass and fig towards the finish, this is certainly the “dark horse” of the decade and in my humble opinion, superior to the ’63. A little gem. Tasted November 2007. Croft Port, 1966

    Vintage Port

The 1966 Croft Vintage Port is a distinguished example of mid-20th-century port craftsmanship from one of the oldest port houses, founded in 1588. The 1966 vintage is celebrated for its exceptional quality, with Croft's offering recognized for its depth, balance, and longevity. This vintage showcases a slightly deeper core and an elegant bouquet of mulberry, tobacco, and balsamic notes. On the palate, it presents flavors of wild strawberry, fig, and a touch of lemongrass, complemented by a silky texture and a well-integrated finish. It is often regarded as a "little gem" and superior to Croft's 1963 vintage.

    Fonseca Port, 1966

    Vintage Port
    Top Shoulder Level
    Unlabelled | Embossed Wax Capsule

The Fonseca 1966 vintage port has a russet rim around an intense brick-red centre. The nose is elegant and restrained, with very fine dark berry fruit at the core, still linear and undeveloped. The fruit is enveloped in a subtle aura of floral scent and notes of aromatic wood. Dense and firm on the palate, still delivering a fresh and youthful fruitiness and vinosity alongside warm flavours of liquorice and black coffee. Still reserved and showing wonderful poise and finesse, the Fonseca 1966 is without any doubt one of the finest Ports of this exceptional year.

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port.

    Taylor Fladgate, 1966

    Single Harvest Tawny Port

Taylors have just announced a limited release of their 1966 Single Harvest Tawny Port. This is a new release of a rich, mellow and spicy 1966 Single Harvest Port.

It is presented in a classic Taylor’s frosted bottle, and packaged in a high quality beech-wood box.

During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. The smooth velvety palate is lifted by a crisp acidity which gives the wine an attractive freshness in spite of its age.

Reviews for 1966 Warre's Vintage Port

    91 points Wine Spectator
There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)

    Jancis Robinson
Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol.
