    Taittinger Collection Victor Vasarely 1978

    Vintage & Artist Edition Background
The 1978 vintage of the Taittinger Collection was the very first in the Collection Series, and in 1983 it was released in a visually striking bottle designed by Victor Vasarely, the Hungarian-French founder of the Op Art movement. His geometric, kinetic design makes this edition a collectible masterpiece. The wine inside was made during one of the smaller yet high-quality harvests in post-war Champagne.

    Blend & Style
The composition blends 60% Pinot Noir—drawing from the Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne Grand Cru vineyards—with 40% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. Disgorged only after six years’ ageing on the lees, this vintage Champagne has evolved into a richly layered wine with hallmark elegance.

    Appearance & Nose
In the glass the wine reveals a deep golden-amber hue, a sign of both age and gentle oxidative maturation. The bouquet is richly aromatic, showing dried fruits such as apple and pear, layered with toasted nuts, honeyed brioche, and hints of caramel and lemon zest. Floral wafts and light baking spice emerge with air, adding complexity.

    Palate & Texture
The palate opens with a refined mousse and smooth mouthfeel. Flavours reflect more mature profile — dried orchard fruits, fig, orange peel, toasted almond, subtle coffee and dark chocolate — marrying roundness with mineral precision. Its balanced acidity offers lift, while gentle oxidative qualities provide warmth and resonance in the mouthfeel, leading to a long, elegant finish.

    Maturity & Drinking Window
Now over 40 years old, the 1978 Vasarely is fully mature. For bottles stored in excellent conditions, it offers vivid tertiary flavours and no signs of decline, and is best enjoyed now. Though further ageing can deepen its oxidative character, its freshness and structure remain intact.

    Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions
Serve at around 10–12 °C in a tulip or tulip-claret glass to allow aromas to evolve. It pairs beautifully with aged poultry, mushroom dishes, smoked fish, or Comté and Gruyère cheeses. It’s quietly contemplative — wonderful to sip slowly and savour as a standalone wine.

    Verdict
This bottle is more than an early chapter in Taittinger’s artist series; it’s a refined expression of vintage Champagne aging. Taittinger Vasarely 1978 blends fruit-forward reserve with ripened complexity, tempered by elegance and texture. Collectors and lovers of mature Champagne alike will find it remarkably rewarding — and artistically memorable.
