  • Description

The Sandeman 1963 Vintage Port stands as a benchmark for classic Port from one of the most legendary vintages of the 20th century. Produced in the heart of the Douro Valley by one of Portugal’s most iconic houses, this wine has matured gracefully for over six decades, offering a remarkable window into the craftsmanship of traditional vintage Port. The 1963 declaration was unanimous across major producers, and Sandeman’s bottling remains one of the standout examples from that historic year.

Now showing its full maturity, the wine reveals a beautifully evolved character. In the glass, it presents a tawny-brick hue with glimmers of amber at the rim. Aromas of dried figs, dates, and roasted nuts unfold alongside hints of spice box, old leather, and cocoa. On the palate, the texture is silky and harmonious, with softened tannins and flavours of stewed cherry, walnut, tobacco, and a touch of caramel sweetness. The finish is long, refined, and lingers with complex layers that only time can deliver.

This is a wine for connoisseurs and collectors alike—one that tells a story with every sip. It’s perfectly suited for special occasions, whether shared among close friends or reserved for a quiet moment of reflection. A well-cellared bottle of Sandeman 1963 will still drink beautifully today, offering a rich and rewarding experience for those who appreciate mature Port at its best. Proper decanting is essential, as it allows the wine to breathe and separates it from decades of natural sediment.

Bottles of this vintage are increasingly rare, especially those with strong provenance and good fill levels. For those fortunate enough to own or acquire one, it represents not just a fine wine, but a piece of vinous history. Whether for drinking or for investment, the Sandeman 1963 Vintage Port continues to earn its place among the greatest Ports ever made.

"This may be one of the most underrated '63s made. Its deep red color gives little indication of the wine's age, and there is an abundance of youthful, rich fruit on the nose and palate. Full tannins and an assertive finish back up everything." 96/100 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator

The 1963 Sandeman has less of a deep-ruby/purple colour, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavours, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port.

"It was stunning: pale peach-pumpkin in colour, with a rich spicy nose of bitter orange peel, mocha and hints of red fruit. One the palate it was medium-bodied, powerful and silky but still delicate, with loads of coffee, wood, spice, sweetness and medium fruit flavours that were hard to pinpoint. The length was fabulous. It was definitely old but not at all tired. I’d highly recommend it!"
