  • Description

Our wine buyer has put together a fabulous selection of Ports. We take pride in visiting and working with small producers to import outstanding ports so that we can offer them at great prices. This selection of Ports is an expression of that philosophy and features four producers that we have been working with over the last 12 months.

    The pack contains (all 75cl):
    Tawny Port by Messias
    Ruby Port by Burmester
10 Year Old White Port by Quinta da Devesa
2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port from Quinta Das Carvalhas
    2009 Messias Colheita
    2002 Vintage Port from Barros

    Tawny Port by Messias
This "entry level" Tawny by Messias has rich caramel burnt sugar and cedar notes on the nose. Smooth vanilla and caramel on the palate with amazing acidity and complexity. Bright acidity and smooth and mild to the taste.

    Ruby Port by Burmester
This wine is obtained by blending different harvests, initially aged in oak vats and subsequently blended after 3 years. It is bottled young in order to preserve its strong and lively personality. Its exceptional fruity, fresh and original bouquet is a unique experience when drunk in the open air.

10 Year Old White Port by Quinta da Devesa
We started working with Quinta da Devesa, a small family-owned winery because of their reputation for white Ports. The NV 10 Years White Port was bottled in 2020 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Not showing anywhere near as sweet as the residual sugar statistics would suggest, this does still seem very rich. It is not a style that is as bright and lively as some, but there is more intensity of flavor than most. It has bitter chocolate and caramel nuances, sometimes seeming more Tawny-like. It adds some grip on the finish.

2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port from Quinta Das Carvalhas
This 2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port from Carvalhas divulges a balanced bouquet of mature black cherries, nuances of cistus combined with dark chocolate and hints of wood. Full-bodied, fruity, dense, rich and firm with a great length of flavour, result of the prolonged stay in wood. The Late Bottled Vintage of Quinta das Carvalhas presents a differentiating Vintage style, through a Port of great quality, produced solely in good years and made from one specific Vintage as shown on the label. For the LBV’s, fermentation takes place in the stone lagares followed by the traditional treading by foot, which, ensures greater yet softer extraction for the necessary concentration. Ageing occurs in oak vats for a period of 4 to six years, on the contrary to a Vintage Port, which ages only 2 years.

    2009 Messias Colheita
A refined and elegant cask-aged Port, showcasing the craftsmanship of Messias in producing quality fortified wines. It would be ideal for those who enjoy Tawny Ports with depth, maturity, and a smooth, lingering finish. The extensive barrel ageing has given this wine a tawny colour with an expressive nose of wild dried fruit aromas where nutty undertones stand out. On the palate, caramel nuances complement the dried fruit leading to a sweet vanilla touch. It finishes long with a persistent and fine aftertaste.

    2002 Vintage Port from Barros
For the vintage Port selection we needed something with a little age to showcase how vintage Ports develop over time without blowing our budget. We turned to the 21 year old vintage Port (2002 Vintage) from Barros. This Port has a 95% opaque centre, just starting to change colour on the rim. Lovely and open on the nose, softly fruity. Silky texture on the palate with lovely fruit and a good balance. The flavours and complexity grows really well with violets all over the palate. A lingering aftertaste and finish which is full of slightly spicy red licorice.
