Description

97 points James Suckling
From the family collection, disgorged ten years after harvest, slightly lower than original dosage. Shows some malolactic honeyed character (rare in Cristal at 20-25%), a cool late September harvest with a poor set and high millerandage in the vineyard. This shows more dominant chardonnay on the nose with sweet honey and nougat, some dried lime citrus too, it also has an earthy side and some deep spice. The palate has almost cognac-like fruits, toasted brioche and raisin bread flavours, very assertive, concentrated, a liqueur-like Champagne that has a lot of potential and great length. (NS) (3/2012)

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Very strong mousse. Deep, yeasty aromas dominated by toffee, butterscotch and toast. Quite powerful but already harmonious, with real thickness of flavor and oily extract leavened by ripe acidity. Very fresh in the mouth, with very ripe hints of yellow fruits and strawberry complicated by leesy and toasty flavors in the background. A large-scaled, extremely backward wine that should develop for a decade or two in bottle. This is looking like a great vintage for both Cristal Brut and Rose. (ST) (12/2001)

92 points Wine Enthusiast
Great refinement shows in the subtle hazelnut, fruit, hay and vanilla aromas of this famous luxury cuvée. The palate is flavorful with lovely dry grape, peaches and cream, toasted nut, plum and flavors, and the mouthfeel is soft, lightly and gently frothy. Finishes long and leaner, but not hard, with mineral and citrus notes. (12/2001)

Jancis Robinson
Very tiny bead. Quite big, broad and toasty. Finishes very dry after a substantial, full bodied palate. A pretty massive champagne though with no suggestion of sweetness. Considerable evolution but it still has something to give too. Very 'serious'. Drink 2007-2020. 18.5/20 (JR) (6/2012)

Wine Spectator
Delicate and firm, especially for 1995, offering dough and citrus on a light-bodied frame. Not the most complex today, but should improve with time. (BS) (12/2001)
