Description
1940 Kopke Single Harvest Tawny Port
The year is 1940, we are in the Douro valley,in the ancient Quinta de São Luiz. 1940 was a difficult year, but the quality of the berries suggested a long life for the wines of this harvest.Over the next decades and generations, there were many opportunities and sustained pressure to launch this nectar onto the market. The world changed and societies evolved. Despite all this, this wine was kept for 80 long years in a cellar that resisted time. But all good things come to those who wait. That patience, together with the terroir and the mastery of ageing wines in wood has transformed this wine into a unique experience.
Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration to extract their colour, tannins and skin aromas, enhanced by constant churning during fermentation. This takes place in vats (lagares) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A wine of high quality, made from one single harvest. Aged in oak wood for 80 years.

"50% Malvasia Fina, 25% Viosinho, 25% Códega. 20% alcohol, pH 3.73, acid 5.06 g/l, sugar 134 g/l. Wet winter and spring, then a very hot summer. Full brown/amber in colour, this is remarkable. So complex and intense with strong savoury, woody characters. Notes of earth and spice, with some old furniture character. So powerful with amazing acidity apparent, and the sweetness is almost completely covered. Notes of treacle, honey, fudge, nuts and citrus peel. 98/100" Wine Anorak
Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine. Once opened colheita Port should be stored in a fridge and should be consumed within 3 months. Colheita Ports do not require decanting and are best served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C.

"The seemingly inexhaustible supply of amazing old tawnies from this producer must surely have reached its apogee in this magnificent Port. Intense, both sweet from the original fruits and dry with the 80 years of wood aging, the wine still has raisin and dried prune flavors as well as the wonderful concentration. Like all old tawnies, this wine is ready for sipping. Roger Voss"
