Description
The 1970 Graham’s is a legendary Vintage Port from one of the Douro’s most consistently outstanding producers. Declared in an exceptional year, this wine has become one of the most celebrated Ports of the 20th century. Known for its lush, fruit-driven style, Graham’s 1970 is a benchmark for what mature Port can achieve — combining richness, depth, and graceful longevity.
After more than five decades in bottle, the wine has developed an extraordinary bouquet. Aromas of stewed plum, black cherry, and dried fig unfold alongside notes of rose petal, walnut, cedar, and a touch of caramel. There's a signature Graham’s opulence to the nose, yet it's balanced by a subtle sense of freshness and lifted spice. With time in glass, hints of cocoa, orange peel, and aged brandy add further intrigue.
On the palate, this Vintage Port is full-bodied, smooth, and densely layered. The once-powerful tannins have mellowed into a silky frame that carries rich, sweet flavours of black fruit, raisin, and fruitcake, laced with tobacco and spice. The wine retains beautiful energy, with a persistent finish that echoes with liquorice, nutmeg, and roasted almonds. It is an immensely satisfying and complete expression of mature Port.
This wine is at peak maturity and offers extraordinary drinking pleasure now, though top examples can continue to hold for another decade or more. No extended decanting is required — 1 to 2 hours is sufficient to let it open and separate from sediment. Perfect alongside aged cheeses like Stilton, or as a contemplative glass on its own at the end of a special evening
