Description
Framingham Noble Riesling is a sweet, botrytis affected wine inspiredby the classic German “Beerenauslese” style. Botrytis is a fungus that concentrates sugars in the fruit by dehydration and imparts distinctive flavours. The wine is deeply concentrated, yet elegant and not cloying as a result of its vibrant acidity and naturally low alcohol
Bright, brassy gold in colour. Complex aromatics showing significant, but not complete, botrytis influence. Nice mix of stone fruit, honey and pithy marmalade-like citrus, with hints of “gin and tonic”. The palate is tight, but has richness and viscosity. Lots of liquid marmalade type flavours, vibrant grapefruit citrus and apricot with hints of mango and other tropical fruits; “pure” botrytis flavours. Fine, juicy acidity keeps it all honest and prevents any sense of cloying.
The original vineyard was established by Wellington engineer Rex Brooke-Taylor who took the name Framingham from his ancestral home town near Norwich, England. Our initial releases were produced using other wineries’ facilities. First planted in 1981 with what is now amongst the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough, our Wairau Valley vineyard is based on warm, well drained stony soils. We take a low impact approach to vineyard management with a lot of hand work and a strong environmental focus avoiding systemic chemicals and planting flowers to encourage biodiversity. Accredited as a sustainable vineyard and winery under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand program, we are currently in conversion to organic viticulture – further minimising our impact on the land and bringing things back into balance. Our Framingham range has grown with a strong tradition of winemaking for balance, texture and complexity. Today we are a family-owned Sogrape company.
