  • Description

The 2016 Quinta da Leda is a top-quality red wine of great complexity and elegance, a fine example of the richness and modernity of great Douro wines today. It is an honoured member of the range of Casa Ferreirinha, the company with the longest tradition of production of top-quality unfortified Douro wines and one of the most respected Douro names throughout the world.

Tasting Notes: Quinta da Leda is very deep red in colour. Its aroma is intense and extremely complex, dominated by ripe plum and blackcurrant, resin and cedar, as well as clove and nutmeg, then notes of violet, and a touch of chocolate (signs of a ripe year) always perfectly integrated with subtle oak of excellent quality. Quinta da Leda is famous for its body and elegance, its well-balanced acidity, excellent tannins and flavours of black fruits, with spicy and floral notes. It has a very long, harmonious finish.

The wine comes from a great estate in the Douro Superior that forms the basis for the blend of the iconic Barca Velha. It has a beautifully subtle harmony between the rich black fruits and the structured wood and tannins. There is balance and elegance in this impressive wine that demands aging. Drink from 2022. Deep purplish crimson, with purple rim. Intense, pure, peppery and spiced black fruit. Again more cassis than damson or plum. There’s more of Touriga Nacional’s floral character too – some violet notes – even though the percentage is not that high this year. A light herbal note promising freshness. Fabulously pure and dark-fruited scent as it opens. A little oaky on the palate at this young stage but marked freshness from start to finish, highlighting the fruit purity. Firm, chewy but smoothed tannins, polished. Long, too. Fresh and elegant. The structure is refined, the finish fresh and long. Real tension here. GV (JH)
