  • Description

Cálem Classic Vintage Port, from the Douro Superior, reflects a myriad of terroirs that make up the classic profile of this House.
The result is of a blend from different plots of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousão. This Vintage by Cálem maintains the identity of the Port house: wines with a more robust profile, with firm structure and ripe fruit.

This Vintage presents an intense purple colour, the aromas are marked by blackberries that are complemented by notes of forest fruits, dark chocolate, pepper and slightly more resinous notes. Concentrated and intense, this is an irreverent and generous wine, with very firm tannins, suggesting great ageing potential. A Vintage that is “robust, full-bodied and vibrant”, notes Carlos Alves.

From the Douro Superior, a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Sousão: bright crimson in hue on the rim; open on the nose with lovely smoky-dusky black cherry fruit; sweet and succulent initially on the palate, nicely defined with gripping peppery tannins lingering on the fresh, berry fruit finish. 3992 bottles declared. 17.5/20 points- Nick Mayson.

Cask sample. Black core with purple rim. Ripe black plums and damsons on the nose. Quite subdued on the nose but lively and deeply fruited on the palate. There's a rather attractive stone-dust quality that reminds you this is the rocky Douro. On the palate, the sweetness is to the fore, with firm chewy tannins balancing all that sweetness and alcohol. Dense, generous and long. 16.5/20 (JH) Jancis Robinson.com.
