Description
A rare vintage Madeira wine from Blandy's, this 1980 Sercial in double magnum celebratory format offers exceptional quality for collectors and fine wine enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes:
This special 1980 vintage from Blandy's exhibits a bright, crystalline topaz colour with greenish highlights. The nose is ethereal and exuberant, showcasing pronounced notes of spices, citrus chutney, crystallized citrus fruits, and roasted oak. On the palate, it is dry, fresh, and citric, delivering a long, volatile aftertaste with strong impressions of exotic woods, spices, and aged brandy.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decanting will help remove any deposit that may have occurred in bottle over time. Serve chilled at 12–14°C. This vintage Sercial Madeira pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its dry profile compliments smoked salmon, sushi, or sashimi. It also enhances the flavours of creamy mushroom risotto, roasted poultry, or dishes featuring caramelized onions. For dessert, consider pairing it with almond tart or crème brûlée. Once opened it can be enjoyed over several months.
Cellaring Potential:
This wine is already nearly five decades old and drinking beautifully now, but its structure ensures it will remain vibrant for years to come. Store upright in a dark, fresh and dry room with constant temperature, ideally no higher than 16ºC.
Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine for over 200 years. The Blandy's are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.

Reviews
Decanter World Wine Awards: 97 points – "Full yet lithe, showing very inviting aromas of pecan, pastry and burnt citrus peel with delicate mirabelle plum. A tangy dryness belies the sugar level, and there's a lovely saline finale to the fig and dried apricot palate."
Wine Advocate: 94 points – "The just-released 1980 Sercial from Blandy's is showing very well, opening in the glass with aromas of toasted walnuts, candied peel, white tea, orange oil and aromatic bitters. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with racy acids, excellent tension at the core and a long, sophisticatedly saline finish."
Wine Spectator: 94 points – "This has lovely toffee, sesame, ginger and bergamot notes laced with flashes of sandalwood and hazelnut. Has cut and freshness but there's an alluring mellow edge through the finish as the flavors meld together."
