Cockburn Port
Cockburn is the most well known brand of port thanks to its Special Reserve, the worlds biggest selling ruby port. In the early 20th Century it had an enviable reputation for selling the finest quality Vintage Port such as the legendary 1912. However its sale in 1963 and the subsequent focus on the Special reserve led to the decline of the vintage port side of the business.
The nadir for the company was when they decided to ignore the 1977 vintage, probably the finest of the 70's, opting instead to declare a lacklustre 1978 vintage. After a period in the doldrums the formal acquisition of the company by the Symington Family Estates (SFE) in 2010 (who made the wines from 2006) has led to the revival of the brand. SFE have worked hard to rebuild this historic brand by focusing on producing high quality port again. The recent vintages such as the 2015 and 2016 are near the top of the form.

Cockburn Port, 2015
Vintage Port, Douro
This 2015 Vintage Port Wine is only the second Cockburn’s Vintage Port made by the Symington family since it acquired the brand name from Beam in 2010, having bought the vineyards and cellars in 2006. Its declaration of a 2015 Vintage Port is the latest in a number of innovations and investment to mark the company’s bicentenary, with the brand having been founded in 1815. Up until the 1950's Cockburn’s was one of the Douro’s leading Port producers, with its Ports commanding some of the highest prices at international wine auctions. However its rapid expansion into the mass market in the second half of the century served to damage its reputation for fine wines. …

Cockburn Port, 1970
Vintage Port
The 1970 Cockburn is only just coming into full maturity. It is typical of the house: full-bodied, rich, alcoholic and spirited. The wine is meaty, chocolatey, spicy, full-bodied, big and powerful.
Firm, mature appearance. Mature, meaty, earthy hue. Lovely texture. Still has firm acidity. Good mature flavours. Lots of structure still. Good length and pleasantly mature. 16.5/20 (Wine Doctor November 2004)

Cockburn Port, 1960
Vintage Port
This 1960 Cockburn Vintage Port is quite full-bodied, rich, alcoholic, spirited vintage port that offers meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, alcoholic flavours. "A light tawny colour, almost a medium rose, with very slow legs. The nose smelt of marzipan, rosewater and aniseed. A medium bodied taste of ripe dates with a dash of spirit and a fantail finish lasting a good while. This grand port was alive and delivering pleasure. Thank you Cockburns for the treat. 89/100 (Nicos Neocleous, UK)" UK Wine Forum.
