Fonseca Port, 1934

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Excellent Level

The house of Fonseca traces its origins to the early nineteenth century. The first evidence of the firm trading in Port is an entry dated 8th April, 1815, in the ledgers of the Real Companhia Velha, the royal monopoly company. This records the purchase of 32 pipes of Port by the firm’s founder, João dos Santos Fonseca. His first documented sale occurred on 14th September, 1815, followed in 1816 by his first overseas shipment.

James Suckling, in his authoritative book on Vintage Port, put it as follows: 'The vintage Ports of Fonseca are perhaps the most consistently great of them all. Not only do they have a striking fleshiness and powerful richness when young, but they retain that youthfulness for decades.

Colheita Port 1934 Vintage, DOC Douro
** 99 Points- Robert Parker **

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:

If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine. Once opened colheita Port should be stored in a fridge and should be consumed within 3 months. Colheita Ports do not require decanting and are best served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C.

Quinta do Noval Port, 1934

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Level in neck - Very Good Capsule

The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in records in 1715.
The history of Quinta do Noval is marked by the actions of visionaries:
António José da Silva, a merchant from Vila Nova de Gaia, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894 after it had been devastated by phylloxera. He restructured the property by replanting its vineyards.

Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast set of innovations, transforming the old narrow terraces into wider terraces, which are a distinctive feature of Noval, with its whitewashed stairs. These terraces allow for more efficient use of land and better sun exposure, and were considered revolutionary at the time.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1934

Vintage Port, DOC Douro

Shipped for the Wine Society. 1934 is a rare vintage only shipped by 12 houses in small quantities. It is considered to be a very fine year equivalent to the great 1935 vintage and considered by some to be better. The declaration was small owing to the great depression at the time.

Gonzales Byas Vintage Port, 1932

Vintage Port, DOC Douro

This famous sherry producer came to Oporto in 1895 and started to ship port in 1896. From 1901 they purchased their wines from Quinta do Roriz. The port operation was purchased by Sandeman in 1989 and it no longer exists as a trading name.

The 1932 is light tawny in colour with molasses and caramel on the nose. The port is light bodied and the sugar and caramel are evident in the taste. There is some extra complexity in the mouth and the port has a good long finish. Rating 18/20 VWP tasting.

Massandra, 1931

Livadia White Muscat (Includes Original Box as illustrated)
Fortified Sweet Wine

Sotherbys Massandra Collection

The wineries in Massandra were built during the reign of Czar Nicholas II. During the process, wine caves containing thousands of bottles were constructed beneath the city. This “personal wine cellar” of the Czar contained tens of thousands of bottles. These caves survived the Russian Revolution, both World Wars, the fall of Communism, and Yakov Smirnoff. In 1990, about 13,000 of these bottles – never before available in the West – were put to auction

Reviews
Pale brick red, tawny rim; fine, perfumed floral aromas, subdued and slightly earthy but showing the concentration of a remarkable vintage; still rich, quite powerful with fine bitter chocolate concentration mid-palate, still ripe, intense with a fine bitter-sweet finish. 17.5. Fonseca Port, 1927

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Very Top shoulder
Slightly bin soiled label

Review by AHB - Portforum.com "A lovely rich red colour, warm and dark; 90% opaque. Showing little on the nose, but the little it is showing is warm and fruity — and very nice. A beautiful palate, soft entry with poise and balance. The fruit is generous, sweet and ripe and still plentiful. The palate is big and rich; stunning for a port of this age. The aftertaste is amazing — so full of fruit, of rich burnt fruitcake; mouthfilling and immense. This is stunning, stunning port.".

48 hours later a 6cl sample bottle was tasted which showed even mor ecomplexity, being sweeter and rounder than the pop 'n' pour version.
