Bahans Haut Brion, 1998
Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux
2nd wine of Château Haut Brion
Readers looking for the taste of Haut-Brion for about one-third the price should check out the 1998 Bahans-Haut-Brion. It possesses a scorched earth, mineral, smoky, red and black currant-scented bouquet, terrific complexity, purity and elegance, and a harmonious palate. Tannin in the finish suggests 1-2 years of cellaring may be required, but this is a serious effort that should age well for 15+ years. Parker Wine Advocate 2001. Rating 88/100 Excellent

Chateau Cissac, 1998
Medoc, Cru Bourgeois, Bordeaux
Good colour, great legs and nose. Quite nice when opened. Perhaps a trace of liquorice and a hint of 'medicinal' character. After 3-4 hours - quite rich and aromatic with good cherry fruit and a touch of maraschino at the end. Tannins are soft and have integrated completely.

Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1998
Saint-Julien, Bordeaux
The 1998 Gruaud Larose appears to be a potential sleeper of the vintage, and may merit an outstanding score. It is a powerful, bulky style of Gruaud-Larose, with a dark ruby/purple color, and plenty of cassis, spicy new oak, and roasted herbs in the jammy nose. On the palate, the wine has lost much of the forward precociousness it was revealing last spring, now boasting loads of tannin in its powerful, muscular flavors.

Chateau Guiraud, 1998
Sauternes 1er Cru Classe (Half Bottle) *** 90 Points - Outstanding - Robert Parker ***
*** 90 Points - Outstanding - Robert Parker ***
The 1998 Chateau Guiraud has an attractive nose of melted candle wax, brown sugar and marmalade that blossoms in the glass. The palate is clean and pure on the entry with crisp acidity. It is a more feminine, lithe Sauternes compared to the 1997 with a pretty peach and dried apricot finish interlaced with spice. Fine. Drink now-2020. Tasted April 2013. eRobert Parker.

The 1998 Chateau Jean-Voisin is a great value sturdy, juicy and succulent wine showing lovely dark plum and damson with a fabulous full body.

Chateau Margaux, 1998
Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux
Chateau Margaux is one of the grandest buildings amongst the Médoc châteaux. A chequered period of ownership in the 19th and early 20th century meant that the quality of some Margaux vintages was patchy, until a change in ownership in 1977 restored the property to its rightful status. Since then the Chateau has progressed to produce some legendary wines, as well as displaying consistency through the not-so-good years.
The estate has 82 hectares under vine, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominant (75%) with 20% Merlot making up most of the rest, along with a smattering of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. …

Chateau Rieussec, 1998
Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Half Bottles - 37.5cl
The wine is light medium gold-colored, with a blockbuster nose of Grand Marnier liqueur intertwined with flower blossoms, smoky new oak, and coconut. Well-integrated wood has resulted in a seamless, full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine with considerable sweetness. This is a stunningly proportioned, beautifully pure wine.
Château Rieussec is a prestigious Bordeaux wine estate located in the Sauternes appellation, within the Bordeaux wine region of France. The estate is well-known for producing sweet white wines, specifically Sauternes, which are crafted from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot. …

Clos de L'Oratoire, 1998
St Emilion Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux
92 Points - James Suckling
91 Points - WIne Advocate
The 1998 Clos de l'Oratoire is drinking beautifully now. It has a fine concentration, really good expression of ripe fruit and terroir. Lovely classic flavours and ripe Merlot fruit with a nice balance of oak.
Clos de l’Oratoire, located on Saint-Emilion's northeast slope, has 13 hectares of vines. The terroir of Fronsac molasse, consisting of a layer of sandy soil and a clay subsoil, is ideally suited to Merlot (80% of the vines).
Meticulous work is done all year long to maintain quality in the vineyard.
Fermentation takes place exclusively in temperature-controlled oak vats. Oak, a noble material in perfect synergy with fine wine, enhances its colour and flavour, and enables it to reach its full potential. …

Bordeaux, 1997
Barton & Guestier
Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux's wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium-bodied reds that made the region famous.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997
St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux
Deep garnet color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous

Chateau d'Angludet, 1997
Margaux Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, Bordeaux
The 1997 Angludet performed freakishly well in my tastings. It reveals a deep purple color, and gobs of chewy, fat, blackberry and mocha-tinged cherry fruit. An opulent 1997, it possesses superb fruit purity, medium to full body, low acidity, and a seductive, fleshy personality. This wine is a sleeper of the vintage.
*Robert M. Parker, Jr. The Wine Advocate*
Château d'Angludet or Château Angludet, is located in the appellation Margaux, in the commune of Cantenac on the left bank of the Gironde. The estate was classified a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 1932, and most recently a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2003. …

Chateau Gloria, 1997
St Julien, Bordeaux
The 1997 Chateau Gloria is generous and well-structured, these intense, complex wines are typical of the Saint Julien appellation. The result of traditional vinification, they have a strong, rich colour. On the palate, they are expressive, rounded and supple. They should be kept for a few years to express their full potential.
This property consists of several plots located in the best terroirs of the appellation that Henri Martin, one of the great figures of the Médoc, had put under the same banner. Today it is headed by her daughter. In 1942 Henri Martin purchased four hectares of vines in St Julien, which became Gloria. …

Chateau Larmande, 1997

The 1997 Chateau Larmande is evolved but still wonderfully vibrant and expressive St. Émillion. that feels like it is slowly approaching its plateau of maturity. Very good value.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases, 1997
St Julien, 2nd Growth Classification, Bordeaux
Magnum Bottle
Léoville Las Cases is the most legendary wine of Saint-Julien: on a quality par with the Médoc's first growths, without the hefty price premium to match. It is a prime example of a Bordeaux 'super-second' - a second growth operating at a first growth level. Léoville Las Cases is also one of the largest, oldest and most picturesque of the Médoc's classified Bordeaux growths. Grapes are fermented at lower than average temperatures, which is partially responsible for the wines displaying some of the most exotic aromas and aromatic richness in the Médoc.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1997
Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux
*** 88 Points - Neil Martin Wine Journal ***
Reviews:
"This has a superb nose, very lifted and well-defined, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke and a touch of burnt toast. Just soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied, ripe tannins, beautiful balance and poise with a sense of controlled opulence towards the finish. It comes across very natural, black cherries, blueberry, a touch of orange zest. This is certainly an over-performing wine for the vintage and shows better than previous bottles, although it did fade a little when returning after 15 minutes in the glass. Drink now-2015. Chateau Talbot, 1997
St Julien, 4me Cru Classe, Bordeaux
Magnum Bottle
The 1997 Chateau Talbot has a saturated purple color, and a sweet, earthy, leather, and cassis-scented nose. In the mouth, the wine is fat and opulent, with low acidity. The finish is all glycerin, alcohol, and juicy fruit. It may be almost too low in acidity, but it is drinking well and can be expected to do so for another decade.
Owned by the Cordier family since 1917, the wines of Château Talbot have always enjoyed particular acclaim in the UK. An impressive 107 hectares are under vine here, with around 86% being devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are strong, sturdy and built to last, with a certain ‘gout de terroir’. …

Reviews; "Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this is a huge, backward wine. The 1996 possesses an opaque purple color, as well as pure aromatics consisting of cassis, grilled herbs, coffee, and toasty new oak. Massive in the mouth, and one of the most structured and concentrated young Cos d'Estournels I have ever tasted, this thick, structured, tannic wine has closed down significantly since bottling. It requires 7-8 years of cellaring, and should last for 30-35 years. It is a fabulous Cos, but patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. …
