Inferno, 1971

Enologica Valtelinese

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Nebbiolo, 1971

Poderi Lanzavecchia

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Cantine Prandi, 1970

Cantine Prandi, Barolo, Piedmont - LAST LIBRARY STOCK

The 1970 Barolo Cantine Prandi have come from the producer's cellars where they have laid undisturbed since bottling.

Cantine Prandi was established in the 1920s when grandfather Farinetti Majorino envisioned selling part of the wine produced for family use to the commercial market. In the 1960's his nephew Giovanni came to lend a hand and was instrumental in shaping the winery and its future development. Up to 2009, Giovanni's son Alessandro looked after the beautiful vineyards situated in the long hills surrounding Piemonte. In recent years, due to Alessandro's passing, the winery ceased production.

St Estephe, Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptional
Special offer | Was £129 | Now £89

Colour is darker than expected with very little bricking. Nose shows clear signs of age and let's you know it is no longer at peak but after a few minutes of air exposure, it comes together nicely. Classic wet tobacco and ash notes on the nose. Medium body but full attack with bright acidity and even though both fruit and tannins have receded, there's still some sweetness. It really penetrates your tastebuds. More tertiary notes of forest floor, game, wet leather, tobacco and cigar box. Finish is pleasant.
