Crusted Port - Bottled in 1974

Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle.
Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage.

Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.

Usually a year is stated on the label which, because the wine was made from a blend of harvests, is the year in which the wine was bottled.

Janneau, 1972

Armagnac 1972 Vintage
Includes wooden presentation case

Vintage Armagnacs, especially those aged over 50 years, are rare and highly coveted by collectors and spirit enthusiasts. The 1972 vintage from Maison Janneau is particularly valuable due to its age and the producer's reputation.

Tasting Notes
The 1972 Armagnac from Janneau is a rich amber to mahogany colour, indicating long-term aging. Its nose is complex, with aromas of dried fruits, vanilla, caramel, and oak. The palate is full-bodied and silky, with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, and toasted nuts. The finish is long and satisfying, with a warm, lingering aftertaste.

Taylor Fladgate, 1972

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it.

Chateau Liot, 1971

Sauternes (Berry Bros & Rudd Label)
Sweet White Wine

Château LIOT extends its vineyard in the Haut Barsac, a privileged place for the production of great sweet wines.

The particularity of the Barsac terroir is the red clay soil which rests on a bed of broken limestone, favoring the penetration of the roots in the soil and ensuring the drainage.

The proximity of the Ciron river and the sunny afternoons are very favorable to the development of Botrytis Cinérea, which is essential for the elaboration of great sweet wines. After a traditional fermentation and vinification, the wine is aged in barrels for 9 to 12 months.

About Chateau Liot Château Liot is a prominent wine estate situated in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France.

Madeira, 1971

Miles Malmsey Madeira

The island of Madeira, of volcanic origin, was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese Captain, João Gonçalves Zarco, and is an archipelago composed of two inhabited islands – Madeira and Porto Santo – and two small uninhabited islets, the Desertas and the Selvagens.
Madeira’s location in the Atlantic made it an important strategic port of call which led to the rapid expansion of the island’s wine, especially in countries such as the United States of America.
It was so popular in the USA that in the 18th century, Madeira wine is reported to have represented over 75% of all wine imported into this market.

Tokaji, 1971

Szamarodni - Monimpex (Half Litre, 50cl)

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labeling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

Deep amber colour with greenish hints. In the nose stands-out the exuberance of the dried fruits with outstanding hazelnut suggestions. In the mouth, its excellent structure prevails under a desirable essence of caramel and chocolate. An irreprehensible wine with a superb flavor and finish.

Cotes du Rhone, 1966

Sale

Quien & Co, Côtes du Rhône
BLACK FRIDAY Clearance Offer | Was £119.00 | Now £69.00

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

Reviews for 1966 Warre's Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator
There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)

Jancis Robinson
Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol.

1964 Barolo

Santa Rita
BLACK FRIDAY Clearance Offer - Bin Soiled Labels - Was £149 | Now £99

This wine is a classic example of traditional Barolo winemaking, the 1964 vintage is widely regarded as an outstanding vintage for Barolo, characterised by ideal weather conditions that produced wines with great balance, structure, and longevity. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines.
